About Michelman & Robinson, LLP

With nearly 80 attorneys across five offices (three in California, one in New York, one in Chicago), Michelman & Robinson, LLP (M&R) is focused on the future and poised for sustained growth.  Representing clients across an array of industries and with an impressive string of significant victories as of late, this thriving firm continues to expand its national presence. To its credit, M&R's management encourages associates to be an integral part of the growth strategy, providing the mentoring and resources to make it happen.

Small Firm, Big Impact

Don't let size fool you. While M&R may be a smaller firm than many of its competitors-it has only been operating since 1999, after all-that hasn't stopped it from being a major contender for high-profile work in a range of practice areas.  Superstar partners and co-founders Sanford L. Michelson, a litigator, and Mark B. Robinson, a transactional lawyer, have added to their team at a rapid pace. M&R's well-known insurance, hospitality, advertising and digital media, class action and complex litigation, commercial and business litigation, and corporate finance practices stand out from the crowd. And while it continues to be primarily West-Coast based, M&R's clients-which include Fortune 500 companies, insurance-related entities, advertising and digital media firms, hotels and restaurants, financial institutions, high-tech and industrial enterprises, real-estate developers, government agencies, entrepreneurs in major and emerging industries, educational and philanthropic institutions, individuals, and small and mid-sized businesses-are all over the globe.

Insurance Insiders

M&R is perhaps best known for its representation of private equity sponsored insurance company consolidators, and three of its long-time clients are now among the top 15 insurance brokers in the U.S. While mergers & acquisitions, as well as regulatory work, has been the firm's bread and butter in this space, M&R also prides itself on handling litigation, employment and intellectual property matters for these billion dollar acquirers, among many others in the insurance space.

Advertising and Digital Media Mavens

Advertising, creative and media-buying agencies, advertisers, media outlets, ad-tech companies, Internet publishers and other content providers rely on M&R to keep pace with the ever-changing advertising and digital media landscape.

Because M&R is an industry-focused firm, M&R's attorneys immerse themselves in their clients' world, and are involved with some of the market's preeminent trade associations and events, including 4A's, Digital Place-based Advertising Association (DPAA), Direct Response Marketing Association (DRMA), Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Advertising Week, 212NYC and ThinkLA, among others. Because of knowledge such as this, M&R is a go-to firm for these types of companies, handling matters (litigation and transactional) as diverse and complex as the advertising and digital media industries themselves.

Hospitable Attorneys

M&R has achieved recognition in the Golden State and beyond for its success in counseling, litigating and handling transactional matters in the hospitality industry. From employment disputes to advice on business start-up, day-to-day operations, and corporate governance, and seemingly everything in between, M&R's hospitality practice is robust with a multi-disciplined group of lawyers. In 2016, M&R client closed escrow on a $1.8 million dollar restaurant purchase of assets from another restaurant company.

Class Action Stars

M&R has become well known for its complex litigation experience and class action prowess, defending more than 50 class actions in the past decade. The firm has successfully defended companies in a number of industries against class actions alleging unfair business practices, unfair competition and misappropriation of trade secrets, wrongful termination, and wage and hour and benefit violations.

Tremendous growth

M&R experienced significant growth in the first half of 2016. The firm gained a total of 16 attorneys across NY, OC, LA and Chicago offices, and added depth to various practice areas. A team of intellectual property attorneys joined the firm's Orange County office from K&L Gates in May 2016, and a group of seven commercial, corporate, employment and real estate attorneys moved from Vandenberg & Feliu to M&R's New York office in late May.

Taking on the Digital Music Business Model

M&R represents David Lowery, lead singer and guitarist of bands Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven, in a $150 million class action against Spotify and, more recently, a $200 million class action against Rhapsody. On December 28, 2015 the class action lawsuit against Spotify was filed in the Central District Court of California. The complaint alleges Spotify knowingly, willingly, and unlawfully reproduces and distributes copyrighted compositions without obtaining mechanical licenses.

June 2015
Expands SoCal presence

M&R relocated its LA office to the heart of Westwood. The move, prompted by M&R's quick growth and resulting need for additional space, brings the firm closer to many of its clients. The modern office is geared to help facilitate the firm's interactive and innovative approach to client service. The 27,000 square foot suite is equipped with state-of-the-art technology capabilities, an in-suite café, and a spacious and versatile multi-purpose room. The new space reflects M&R's commitment not only to growth, but collegiality.
