Why Work Here

At McGuireWoods, our attorneys and staff can expect to be part of a diverse culture built on respect, unwavering client service and a collective desire for professional excellence.  With an exciting work environment that features new and innovative technologies; career advancement training; top of the line benefits options; as well as the opportunity to engage with our many communities across the U.S. and Europe, our employees gain the experience they need to excel as part of one of the world’s most sought after law firms.

Always looking to implement new technologies and approaches, McGuireWoods has embraced the use of Legal Project Management, an innovative approach that greatly enhances the organization and management of matters and cases.  We also are a pioneer in the creative use of alternatives to the billable hour, offering fixed fees for large portfolios of work that have brought much-needed certainty to our clients’ spending on outside counsel.

An evolving career is a strong career, and we encourage our employees to take advantage of the professional development services offered to them.  Two important aspects of our career path are the training and advancement opportunities designed to encourage leadership, promote collaboration and teach better use of technology.  All McGuireWoods employees can benefit from on-the-job training, in-house seminars, courses in Continuing Legal Education and an array of career development programs through Practicing Law Institute.

“From the earliest years, associates receive training on client relations and business development, as well as substantive opportunities such as CLEs and practice group meetings…” says one senior associate.

“McGuireWoods is actually well-positioned to give good training to its associates because of our size and scope. We have plenty of large, complicated matters which give attorneys the opportunity to work on very sophisticated issues, but we also maintain enough smaller matters to give younger lawyers opportunities take on significant responsibility early in their careers.”

A McGuireWoods career gives you the rare opportunity to be part of a corporate partnership that includes McGuireWoods Consulting LLC, our public affairs subsidiary that provides government relations services, high-level media relations, grassroots mobilization, advocacy, and influential relationships with state and federal decision makers.

For law students, we offer summer programs and on-campus interviews.  Through hands-on work experience, individual training and social activities, prospective associates find out what it means to be a McGuireWoods lawyer.  On-campus interviews give our recruiters the chance to meet law students face to face, and get to know which area of practice they are interested in.

For staff and attorneys, McGuireWoods offers extremely generous paid parental and adoption leave policies with 18 weeks paid leave for primary caregivers and six weeks for secondary caregiver.  Additionally, a reduced-hour phase-in period upon returning from parental leave is available, as well as a back-up care plan for a child or another loved one.  We have a progressive part-time policy for lawyers, and a variety of career options for attorneys interested in creating their own path to becoming a partner and who value a work-life balance. As for vacation, the firm believes that rather than limiting an associate’s amount of leave time, each associate may take any amount of approved leave as long as he/she is meeting the firm’s billable hour requirements.

One of the world’s leading law firms, McGuireWoods serves our many longstanding clients with deep and broad legal experience, an intimate understanding of businesses and markets, innovative delivery of practical, business-minded solutions, and unmatched service.

That’s the reason we are consistently placed among a very small group of elite firms in surveys such as BTI Consulting’s coveted “Client Service A-Team.” This annual ranking, derived from unprompted feedback from General Counsel and other top decision makers at Fortune 1000 companies, singles out just 30 firms, out of hundreds serving leading companies, for its esteemed “Client Service 30,” the crème de la crème of leading law firms. McGuireWoods has made the list eight times,  garnering recognition most recently as one of the “Leaders of the Best” for providing value for the dollar and solving client problems.

McGuireWoods was also ranked among the top 12 law firms nationwide representing Fortune 500 companies in Corporate Counsel magazine’s annual survey of “Who Represents America’s Biggest Companies.”  In the end, our continuing success comes down to one simple fact: We listen to our clients.

Pro bono

With 21 office locations worldwide, our employees have the chance to give back to the many communities that we call home.  In fact, the firm regularly donates to more than 300 nonprofit organizations throughout the world, and our lawyers give thousands of pro bono hours on an annual basis including death penalty cases, child support enforcement prosecutions, housing law cases, battered spouse representations, wills and powers of attorney, court-appointed criminal defense, and general counseling for nonprofit groups.

Legal Project Management

Proper organization and management of legal matters allows the firm to be more efficient and accountable, while offering a proactive method for archiving cases.  To accomplish this, McGuireWoods has pioneered the use of legal project management with ClientSyncTM, a system that plans and tracks budgets, appropriately delegates tasks, manages client communication and derives feedback from clients.

For more than 20 years, the firm has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to implement green strategies for recycling, reducing waste and cutting down on paper use.  As part of our Green Vendor Policy, we are migrating to sustainable suppliers, and we have seven office buildings that are LEED-certified.  Moving forward, the firm has joined the Law Firm Sustainability Network and our legal practice has a 30-year history in sustainability-related matters.

Diversity & Inclusion

As one of our core values, diversity & inclusion is a tenet of the McGuireWoods experience.  We offer tremendous opportunities to minority law students, like our Diversity Scholarship Program, the Leadership Council On Legal Diversity Scholarship Program, and the 2015 Law Preview Scholarship Program.  Our Charlotte location hosts the Legal Diversity Clerkship Program, and we sponsor an internship program in partnership with the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.
