About Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP was founded in 1965 in Los Angeles and has grown to 400 attorney and consultants across eight U.S. offices. With five offices in the Golden State, Manatt is a West Coast force, especially in its native L.A. From its roots in banking, entertainment and government, the firm has grown and now offers a range of practices.

Looking beyond L.A.'s Glamour and Glitz

Though its offices reach from Sunset Boulevard to the Adirondacks, Manatt retains a distinctively Hollywood bent, with numerous entertainment players topping a client roster that's also well-stocked with institutional corporate clients.

The firm's rolodex includes such deep-pocketed clients as the Los Angeles Clippers, AT&T, Blue Shield of California, Dignity Health (formerly Catholic Healthcare West), Kindred Healthcare, Tesoro, Bertelsmann AG, DIRECTV, Lowe Enterprises, Siemens, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Goldman Sachs and Central Pacific Bank. Manatt's Tinseltown headquarters affords the firm a prime position from which to nab industry whales-the firm has represented such entertainment clients as Sony Pictures Entertainment, Michael Douglas, the Black Eyed Peas, R. Kelly, Randy Jackson and Barbara Streisand. Many such luminaries find themselves in the capable hands of Manatt's litigation division, whose lawyers comprise nearly half the firm.

Manatt's transactional attorneys handle mergers & acquisitions, capital markets, financing, venture capital, private equity, real estate, tax, joint ventures, licensing, and trust and estate administration services. The litigation practice covers a variety of areas, including antitrust, environmental and toxic torts, complex business disputes, intellectual property disputes, white collar defense, government investigations and inquiries, employment matters, and appellate work.

The firm's core practice areas include a number of sub-specialties. Attorneys in the government and regulatory practice counsel on consumer protection and product safety, land use, environmental regulation and energy project development, green marketing and government contracts. Manatt's healthcare practice serves public and private hospitals and hospital systems, academic medical centers and research institutions, biotech and pharmaceutical companies and life sciences venture capital funds.

Manatt has also diversified with ancillary businesses, including ManattJones Global Strategies LLC, a team of professionals providing strategic advice and advocacy to help clients identify new opportunities and resolve problems in the international marketplace, established by former U.S. ambassadors Charles Manatt and James Jones; Manatt Health Solutions, an interdisciplinary policy and business advisory division helping healthcare clients develop and implement strategies to address their greatest challenges, improve performance and position themselves for long-term sustainability and growth; and, launched in 2013, Manatt Digital Media, which the firm describes as "a disruptive full-service digital media services business offering a one-stop shop for empowering venture capital, strategic business consulting and partnerships, aggressive and smart negotiating, and unchallenged direct access to A-list artists and global brands."

More than Just Legal Advice
Since its launch a year ago, the Los Angeles-based venture, Manatt Digital Media, is making waves combining legal counsel, business strategy and investments in the digital media space.

Largely the brainchild of T. Hale Boggs, the company's chairman and a Manatt partner, Manatt Digital Media offers three services: legal advice, strategic consulting and venture capital. Alongside company CEO Peter Csathy, Boggs has worked to build awareness of the venture by speaking at media conferences and holding quarterly "digital media meetups" on both coasts.

Advisors to the Navajo Nation
Manatt, Phelps & Phillips attorney Craig Moyer served as lead counsel in a deal that allows an energy company created by the Navajo Nation to purchase a coal mine in northwestern New Mexico.
