About Lathrop & Gage LLP

Since its founding in 1873, Lathrop & Gage has grown to ten offices nationwide, from Los Angeles to Boston, helping the firm reach all their clients' needs at the local, state, and national levels. The firm's 320 attorneys specializes in providing corporate legal services in business transactions, employment and employee benefits, environmental, intellectual property and litigation.

Older and Wiser

Considered the oldest continuously operating law firm west of the Mississippi River, Lathrop & Gage has a client roster that includes ongoing relationships that span over 100 years. The firm was founded by Gardiner Lathrop, one of Kansas City's first school board members and bar presidents, and John Gage, a "Reform Mayor" who drove the notorious Pendergast Machine. The firm's founders met when Lathrop handed Gage his high school diploma after he had delivered the commencement address at his high school. Lathrop had already opened the firm in 1873 with William Smith, and when Gage opened his own in 1930, Lathrop took notice. The two firms did not unite until 1996, when the firms pooled together their 140 attorneys to begin the start of a litigation powerhouse. From its humble beginnings in the heartland of America, Lathrop & Gage has grown to become one of the best firms in the Midwest, and beyond.
