About Kenyon & Kenyon LLP

Editor's note: In August 2016, Andrews Kurth hired all of Kenyon & Kenyon's attorneys and the firm wound down.

Kenyon and Kenyon attorneys are specialists in intellectual property law. With a legal team consisting of patent litigators and copyright law experts, Kenyon and Kenyon places an emphasis on employing attorneys capable of understanding scientific and technological cases.

Let There Be Light, and Let It Be Patented

In 1879, patent attorney William C. Witter founded an intellectual property practice in New York City. William Kenyon later joined the firm, which would become Kenyon and Kenyon, as a partner. In its early decades, the firm's attorneys secured patents for inventors in a time when electric lamps were rapidly replacing gas lighting and electric trolleys ousted horse and steam powered transportation.

In fact, some of the firm's first cases in the late 1800s involved patent contentions revolving around the inventions of such tinkering greats as Thomas Edison (lightbulb),  Charles Brush (inventor of a generator which powered the "arc" lights lining Broadway in lower Manhattan,) and Nicola Tesla (invented a motor that could run on alternating current).

Through the twentieth century and into the next, Kenyon and Kenyon has survived as a mainly intellectual property firm in a time when many other intellectual property practices have disbanded or merged their way into larger multi-service firms. According to the Wall Street Journal, firms like Kenyon and Kenyon which are well versed in patent litigation have become "the belles of the Big Law ball."

Intellectual Property Accolades

Now with offices in Washington DC and Silicon Valley in addition to its Big Apple base, Kenyon and Kenyon has become a well-respected name in intellectual property law. Indeed, the firm is routinely acknowledged as one of the top patent and trademark practices nationwide, having received accolades from Chambers, Managing Intellectual Property, IP Law and Business, and the Legal 500 for both its contentious and non-contentious patent and trademark work. Lawyers World Magazine has named Kenyon and Kenyon the "patents law firm of the year" as well as "life sciences law firm of the year."

According to the firm, the vast majority of Kenyon attorneys hold degrees in technology, science or engineering fields, a concentration the firm says is intended to "spare…clients from incurring learning curve costs." Those clients have included Fisher-Price, Mattel, the Toyota Motor Corporation, DaimlerChrysler AG, Enzo Life Sciences, Sony Electronics and Teva Pharmaceuticals.
