About Kelley Drye & Warren LLP

Based in the Big Apple, Kelley Drye & Warren has over 175 years of legal experience. With expertise in over 30 practice areas, the firm has compiled an impressive client roster including JP Morgan, Mylan, Inc., One Communications, Polo Ralph Lauren and Contessa Premium Foods.

Young Prodigy

In 1836, New York attorneys Hiram Barney and William Mulligan founded a firm that started taking major cases early on, working on the bankruptcies of the Metropolitan Street Railway and New York City Railway. Barney was later appointed to the then-prestigious position of Collector of the Customs of the Port of New York by none other than President Abraham Lincoln.

Around the turn of the century, name partner Nicholas Kelley joined the firm. Kelley was instrumental in negotiations to finance the production of Chrysler automobiles. The firm also landed a major bankruptcy matter for Westinghouse Electric, a company that would go on to merge with CBS some 90 years later. Name partner John Wilson Drye also landed the firm huge clients including Union Carbide Corporation, one of the oldest chemical companies.

Kelley Drye partners have long had influence outside the world of private law. Partners have advised or been appointed to offices by the presidential likes of Jackson, Van Buren, Wilson and Lincoln. One former partner assisted in drafting the 1947 Taft Hartley Act, which put heavy restrictions on the activities of labor unions.

Big Apple Home and Beyond

New York is Kelley Drye's birthplace and remains its largest office.  The firm's footprint extends to the tri-state area with offices in Stamford, CT and Parsippany, NJ, and other key markets, including Chicago, IL, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, CA and Brussels.  Attorneys focus on a range of practice areas firm-wide, including corporate transactions, intellectual property, bankruptcy, labor and employment, litigation and real estate. The firm's second largest office in Washington, DC focuses on practice areas such as international trade, advertising, government relations, environmental and antitrust, and has recently expanded its expertise to include government contracts and sports entertainment matters.

Through Kelley Drye's merger with the litigation boutique White O'Connor in 2011, the firm has strengthened it's presence on the west coast, particularly in the areas of entertainment, First Amendment, insurance, media-related torts, real estate, copyright and trademark, antitrust, class actions, and other complex commercial issues.

High Profile History

Kelley Drye has handled its share of high-profile cases. For example, the firm represented JPMorgan Chase in the Enron bankruptcy case and secured an acquittal for Enron's former senior accounting director, Michael Krautz. Kelley Drye's Real Estate attorneys were instrumental in the development of a 52-story office tower in New York City to serve as the international headquarters of The New York Times Company.  They also handled the leasing by the owner of 1100 Avenue of the Americas of all of the office space within the building to Time Warner to serve as HBO's world headquarters. More recently, Kelley Drye's Trademark group scored a significant victory for Ralph Lauren in a long-running trademark dispute.
