About Jones Day

A heavy-hitter with a hand in most major areas of law and an internationally-recognized prowess in litigation, Jones Day uses its size and reach-offices in 19 countries spread over five continents-to maintain strong client relationships with global corporate giants. According to The Am Law 100, it's one of the largest firms in the United States by gross revenue.

Midwest Roots

Founded in Cleveland in 1893 by Judge Edwin Blandin and William Lowe Rice, Jones Day made its name by representing Midwestern manufacturers and transportation companies. One of the first firms in the nation to adopt a corporate management structure, Jones Day continued its rise by opening a Washington, DC office in 1946. The years since the firm's founding have brought steady growth-with the addition of dozens of offices around the world.

Put Up Your Dukes

Jones Day has squared off against some of the nation's most powerful policymakers, starting in 1952, when the firm stood up to Harry Truman over the seizure of U.S. steel mills during the Korean War. Years later, Jones Day litigator H. Chapman "Chappie" Rose made the wise decision to turn down Richard Nixon's entreaty for representation during the Watergate investigation. In 1980, the firm stormed the front pages yet again by suing Jimmy Carter for his gas tax (a case launched in cooperation with the Independent Gasoline Marketers Council) and then defending Ronald Reagan in a scuffle over federal elections funds.

Clients Come First

The firm's DC connections, however, extend beyond the White House: late U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, Senator Charles McC. Mathias, nine-term U.S. Congresswoman Jane Harman, and former U.S. Solicitor General and Harvard Law School Dean Erwin Griswold all spent a portion of their careers at Jones Day. Managing partner Stephen Brogan worked at the DOJ from 1981 to 1983, serving as Deputy Assistant Attorney General. The firm's alumni shine outside of the political arena too-Nextel founder Morgan O'Brien, McKinsey & Company founder Marvin Bower, and Nobel laureate David Morse used to grace the halls of the firm.

Over the years, Jones Day and its lawyers have earned numerous recognitions, awards, and rankings from industry groups (The American Bar Association, The Labor and Employment Relations Association), legal directories (Chambers, The Legal500), publications (The Wall Street Journal, The American Lawyer), league tables (Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters), and non-profits (The Children's Law Center). Perhaps most tellingly, for more than a decade BTI Consulting Group has named Jones Day a Client Service All-Star. The firm is one of only eight in the United States to consistently achieve this ranking, which reflects feedback from corporate counsel to identify lawyers who provide the best service in the nation.

Notable clients include the City of Detroit, which turned to Jones Day during its historic municipal bankruptcy proceedings; American Airlines in its merger with US Airways; Idenix Pharmaceuticals, represented by Jones Day in winning the largest patent infringement verdict in U.S. history; and consumer products giant Procter & Gamble, which regularly seeks advice from the firm for M&A, litigation, and IP matters. On the pro bono front, Jones Day lawyers annually log more than one hundred thousand hours assisting organizations such as the Clemency Project, Kids in Need of Defense, the Innocence Project, and others, while tackling issues like human trafficking, First Amendment rights, access to health care, veterans affairs, and the plight of refugee families seeking asylum in the United States.

May 2017
Immigration Recognition

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas honored Jones Day as a Champion of Justice at its 17th Annual Women's Advocacy Awards. The firm was chosen for its "extraordinary service benefiting women" and "exceptional advocacy" on behalf of immigrant women for its ongoing commitment to representing women with children and unaccompanied children crossing the United States southern border in search of safe refuge. More than 200 Jones Day lawyers, including summer associates, have worked well over 42,000 hours in this ongoing effort.

Helping The Heroes

Jones Day lawyers heard repeatedly that there is no national legal referral system for veterans. Jones Day teamed with the ABA to develop VetLex which launched in the spring of 2017. VetLex is a network to link U.S. veterans, veteran-serving organizations, and qualified pro bono or "low bono" (low cost) lawyers-across town or across the country-who will stand ready, willing, and able to provide the specific legal services veterans need.

February 2017
Ban Brief

Jones Day filed an amicus brief on behalf of a group of constitutional law scholars to assist the Ninth Circuit as it considered whether to grant an emergency stay of a temporary injunction entered by the District Court for the Western District of Washington. That temporary injunction forbid enforcement of President Trump's executive order barring the admission of aliens from seven majority-Muslim countries.

January 2017
The Future is Female

Women were appointed as Partners-in-Charge (PIC) of Jones Day's offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai in January 2017. 16 of 44 Office PICs (Beijing, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Dubai, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Houston, Madrid, Munich, Paris, San Diego, Shanghai, Singapore) and 2 Regional PICs (Europe/Middle East and Southern U.S.) are women, for a total of 18 women PICs.

We're Number One

Jones Day ranked #1 worldwide for the number of deals in both the Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg M&A league tables for the fourth quarter of 2016 and the full year, maintaining a position the firm has held for 64 consecutive calendar quarters. Jones Day ranked #1 in BTI Client Service A-Team. The only law firm ranked "Best of the Best" in all 17 of BTI's Client Service Performance Activities. Among Top 5 every year including #1 or #2 for 15 years.
