About Irell & Manella LLP

A Southern California power for the past half-century, Irell & Manella matches or exceeds its multinational peers in salary, prestige and high-stakes cases. Founded in 1941, Irell enjoys a top-flight reputation and serves clients worldwide from its locations in Los Angeles and Newport Beach.

A Story of Tax, IP, Securities and Entertainment

Irell harkens back to the glamour days of old Hollywood-1941, to be exact: the year in which Orson Welles released a little flick called Citizen Kane and two tax attorneys set up what became one of the most prestigious law firms in Tinseltown. The firm's tax business has been eclipsed by powerhouse IP, securities, litigation transactions, white collar and entertainment practices. Irell's high-profile clients include: Tesla, City of Hope, Genentech, eBay, Snapchat, Hulu, Lionsgate, Warner Bros., TiVo, Pixar, Disney and Skechers and almost a dozen universities have called on the firm.

Irell's IP group has garnered top honors-including recognition from Chambers Global-with IP litigation partner Morgan Chu regarded as one of the best in his class. The firm's ranks also include a number of high-profile securities, white-collar criminal defense and entertainment practitioners. Irell's transactional specialists, meanwhile, work in a wide variety of industries, including green tech and renewable energy, private equity, gaming and entertainment-related deals. Recent deals have included the sale of YouTube network AwesomenessTV to DreamWorks Animation, as well as multiple transactions for Angiotech Pharmaceuticals and gaming company Pinnacle Entertainment.

Fresh Faces

In recent months, Irell has hired a number of distinguished lateral attorneys. In May 2015, nationally renowned litigators, Robert M. Schwartz and Victor Jih joined the firm as partners in the litigation practice group. Michael Fleming also joined the firm in May 2015 as of counsel. Fleming is the former chief administrative patent judge of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Former federal prosecutor Lindsay Kelly joined Irell as special counsel in November 2014. In August 2014, leading entertainment dealmaker Joshua Grode joined the firm with five additional corporate media and entertainment attorneys.

March 2015

A New Beginning

Irell obtained the first-ever resentencing under Senate Bill 9, also known as the California Fair Sentencing for Youth Act, for Edel Gonzalez, a pro bono client sentenced to life without parole as a juvenile. Irell convinced the Orange County Superior Court to recall his original sentence and to pronounce a new parole-eligible sentence of 25 years to life. Irell then appeared before the Board of Parole Hearings and argued that Gonzalez was suitable for parole. The parole board unanimously agreed and recommended his release. On March 25, 2015, Gonzalez gained his liberty after spending 24 years in prison.

February 2015

Protecting Privacy

Irell launched a Cyber Liability and Privacy practice, a cross-disciplinary group dedicated to assessing, investigating and litigating matters arising from information security and data breach incidents. The group helps clients proactively prepare for their specific cyber exposure and provides in-depth assessment to help reduce risk and position and prepare clients should a breach occur. The group helps clients navigate insurers, the media and federal and state regulators when breaches occur. The firm's extensive class action experience provides groundwork to mitigate loss, prepare for potential shareholder and consumer class action suits and if necessary defend against them.

January 2015

Case Dismissed

Irell secured three summary judgments of non-infringement in favor of the firm's client B/E Aerospace in a patent lawsuit brought by MAG Aerospace Industries Inc., a Zodiac Aerospace company, in the Central District of California. MAG Aerospace sued B/E Aerospace for allegedly infringing three patents related to vacuum toilets that can be used on commercial aircraft. Based on the rulings, the entire case against B/E Aerospace was dismissed.

December 2014

What's on Tonight?

Irell represented Guggenheim Securities, LLC, as initial purchaser, in connection with a more than $300-million whole business securitization transaction involving Dick Clark Productions, Inc., the producer of live television programming such as The Golden Globe Awards, The American Music Awards and The Academy of Country Music Awards.

September 2014

Tesla on Top

Irell represented Tesla Motors in defense of a putative shareholder class action for allegedly failing to adequately disclose risks of fire from underbody collisions following several highly publicized incidents involving its automobiles. The plaintiffs claimed the disclosure of the risk caused stock price to drop. Irell secured a dismissal of the complaint without leave to amend.
