Husch Blackwell LLP

Formed from a 2008 combination of two midwestern law firms--Husch & Eppenberger and Blackwell Sanders--Husch Blackwell is a full-service law firm with strengths in business law and litigation. With about 600 attorneys and still growing, the firm is not shy about its girth and keeps packing on the weight.

First Generation

Founded in 1922, St.-Louis based Husch & Eppenberger grew to eight offices across the Midwest housing more than 300 attorneys before it joined forces with Blackwell Sanders. Husch & Eppenberger's overall focus was on business and litigation, with a healthy practice in estate planning. The firm's litigation group handled a broad range of matters, from class actions, product liability and toxic tort cases, to disputes involving lender liability, construction law, insurance coverage, health law, intellectual property and real estate. On the transactional side, the firm's practice focused both on closely-held businesses, entrepreneurs and private clients, but its overall client roster also included national corporations like Arch Chemicals, DaimlerChrysler, Emerson Electric, General Electric, Monsanto, Siemens and Sprint.

Kansas City-based Blackwell Sanders brought its own legion of attorneys to the merger. With nine offices, including ones in Kansas City, St. Louis, and overseas in London, the firm worked with clients like H&R Block to revitalize Kansas City's downtown area. Blackwell Sanders was itself formed of a merger between between Blackwell Sanders Matheny Weary & Lombardi LLP and Peper, Martin, Jensen, Maichel and Hetlage.

Expanding with No Fear

In 2008, the two firms joined forces. The same year, the firm merged with Chicago-based Welsh & Katz, an intellectual property boutique, adding yet another 45 lawyers to its ranks. In 2011, the firm added a couple of dozen attorneys from Denver-based Jacobs Chase, which prior to the mass exodus had focused on real estate and litigation.

Now, Husch Blackwell sports almost 600 attorneys in a baker's dozen of offices throughout the U.S., including locations in Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, Colorado, Arizona, Nebraska and Washington, DC. Absorbing Welsh & Katz no doubt strengthened the firm's intellectual property department, which has won accolades for trademark work from Intellectual Property Today and recognition for its patent litigation from Corporate Counsel magazine. The firm's trusts and estates practice and class action defense work in mass tort litigation have been recognized by U.S. News
