Our Commitment to Pro Bono

Our partnership agreement at Hunton Andrews Kurth says it all in its first two sentences: "The practice of the law is a service to society. While an aid to business, it is concerned also with the public welfare." We believe in a lawyer's obligation to ensure that everyone, regardless of his or her ability to pay, has access to quality legal services. To that end, we encourage all our attorneys to  “give back” through pro bono service, and we allow billable hour credit for up to 50 hours of pro bono work. We are proud to state that since 2009, 100 percent of our U.S. lawyers have participated in at least one pro bono project each year. Last year, together they donated more than 42,000 hours to help those in need.

In 1993, we accepted the Pro Bono Institute's Law Firm Challenge to contribute at least three percent of the firm's total billable hours to pro bono causes, and have met or exceeded the challenge every year since its inception. In addition, we give the E. Randolph Williams award (named after one of the firm's founders) to every lawyer, paralegal and timekeeper who donates more than 100 hours annually to pro bono clients. Last year, 108 lawyers and professional staff, including key firm leaders, received this award.

Pro bono work is more than doing a good deed. It is the foundation of our societal guarantee of equal rights under the law for all people, without regard to social or financial status. It is fundamental to our role as citizens and as citizen-lawyers. — Wally Martinez, Firm Managing Partner

Since my time as a summer associate, I’ve found that pro bono is an integral part of the firm culture at Hunton Andrews Kurth. Pro bono has been an important part of my professional development and a distinguishing factor in my career. Through pro bono service, the firm helps you grow, not just as a lawyer but as an individual. — Uriel Mendieta, Partner, Miami

Our Life Inside the Firm

We work hard at Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP to make our lives both rewarding and enjoyable. We give our associates a great deal of responsibility early in their careers. Even the newest associates work directly with clients and participate in all aspects of transactions and cases alongside partners, counsel and senior associates. Our lawyers have access to the latest technology and support from a talented staff of paralegals, professional assistants, reference and business development professionals. And, we match our new associates with senior associate "coaches" who answer questions and assist in adjusting to life at Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP.

The firm makes real efforts to accelerate your journey through the learning curve. As a junior associate, I’ve already been given responsibility to manage cases while working directly with partners and clients to achieve an ideal result. This jumpstart mentality allows juniors to immediately add value, which gives them earlier opportunities to develop skills typically reserved for more senior attorneys. — Ben Han, Associate, Atlanta Office

Our Life Outside the Firm

Our lawyers are "citizen lawyers." At Hunton Andrews Kurth, we believe it is our obligation to give back to the communities in which we live and work, and we encourage our attorneys to volunteer their services to charitable, religious, civic and community organizations. We also know the importance of a good balance between work and family life, and provide a number of programs to support a family-friendly environment, including strong leave policies, emergency back-up child and elder care, a concierge service and flexible work arrangements. In addition, we encourage our attorneys to engage in outside social pursuits and hobbies, because a lawyer who regularly takes part in activities he or she enjoys is a happier person and a better lawyer.

Community service, which has included serving on the Board of Directors of St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, has allowed me to give back to the community and to gain exposure to interesting and diverse people who have different views from my own. There is a whole world out there that does not revolve around the practice of law. — Sharon Goodwyn, Counsel, Norfolk

I get to do a lot of different things at Hunton Andrews Kurth, from working on white collar criminal matters, to dealing with data breach for a client, to counseling a banker who is under investigation. I've been able to find balance in all of that, while also balancing my family life. Sometimes I’m running to the fields to coach soccer or baseball or football, or running to the dance studio to see my daughter perform ballet. Our clients appreciate that kind of balance as well. Hunton Andrews Kurth gives me the ability to be a great lawyer, as well as a great husband and dad. — John Delionado, Partner, Miami Office

After having my second child in 2010, my supervising partner was very supportive of my decision to reduce my hours. Despite not being a full-time lawyer, I still work on very sophisticated transactions and maintain my leadership role on those transactions, and my team is very supportive when I need to be out of the office to take care of my children. In March 2013, I was promoted to counsel and am still happily and successfully continuing my reduced-hour work arrangement.— Sherry Hutter, Counsel, Richmond Office
