Howrey LLP

Editor's Note: On March 9, 2011, Howrey LLP announced that the partnership had voted to dissolve the law firm as of March 15, 2011.

Miniature Goliath
With around 700 attorneys working at 17 offices in seven countries, the pithily-named Howrey has positioned itself as a junior Goliath, a Mini-Me version of the international megafirms like Baker & McKenzie and Allen & Overy.

Triple strength
Reshaped through a 2000 merger between Beltway firm Howrey Simon and Houston's own Arnold, White & Durkee, the former Howrey Simon Arnold & White isn't one of those messy, all-over-the-map general practice firms. Instead, Howrey trains its focus on a trio of legal practice areas-intellectual property, litigation and antitrust. Firm clients include heavyweight Schering-Plough.

Now in its sixth decade, Howrey has grown quickly in the 21st century, adding hundreds of attorneys and offices in such locales as Salt Lake City, Taipei and Paris; the firm later obtained its Manhattan office by gobbling up a litigation boutique. Howrey has also diversified beyond the boundaries of law, adding a consulting affiliate, The CapAnalysis Group, LLC, that pairs with firm attorneys to provide economic, financial and litigation advice to clients.

More recently, Howrey has generated legal industry headlines and both criticism and praise for its decision to scrap lock-step compensation in favor of a merit-based pay structure. The firm postponed the implementation of the changes after taking heat over the details of the plan announced in June 2007. The new system finally arrived, however, with the dawn of 2009. Experienced associates must now hope for favorable partnership performance assessments to receive what had previously been guaranteed annual raises. Neophytes, meanwhile, can still count on pocketing the market standard in their first year.
