Unique aspects of Haynes Boone, including its Texas charm and offerings like HayBoo U, make it appealing to new associates. Hiring metrics include strong grades, law school involvement, and diversity, with some tendency to hire from Texas law schools. There is a strong emphasis on personalities that will blend well with the firm’s friendly and collaborative environment. People enjoy spending time together at work and at social events. With lean teams, partners rely on associates, value their input, treat them well, and care about their development. Formal training, including for first years in the form of HayBoo U, is effective, as are hands-on experiences with partners. An attorney integration committee helps lateral hires feel welcomed immediately. Work assignments match experie...

About the Firm

From its roots in Dallas-area corporate securities law, Haynes Boone has expanded to 19 offices across the U.S. and abroad. Although much of its bread and butter remains with the Texas corporate scene, Haynes Boone has used its presence in Shanghai and Mexico City to profit from Chinese and Latin American energy deals and international trade.

Like Teacher, Like Student

With $1,600 and a handful of small clients, Richard Haynes opened a solo law office in Dallas in 1964 while moonlighting as a securities law seminar teacher at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. Michael Boone joined Haynes’ office when he graduated in 1967, after impressing Haynes as a student in his classroom; the firm became Haynes and Boone, LLP three years later. Over the next few decades, the ...

Associate Reviews

info

  • “I think the lawyers in my group are all quite friendly with each other. We have limited after-hours firm socialization, which I appreciate—everyone has their own hobbies and priorities to handle in their free time. The day-to-day atmosphere is very friendly, and as relaxed as possible.”
  • “Collegial environment among both associates and partners. Several of my best friends are associates or former associates in the group. I generally feel like my time is respected by the partners. Outside of formal events, partners and associates regularly get lunch or coffee together. Lawyers and staff have friendly interactions.”
  • “Firm culture is unmatched. BigLaw sophistication, with a better work-life balance that is more typical of Texas-based firms. Colleagues socialize together, but mostly I appreciate that I am working with people I am very close with, and have time and freedom to have a social life outside of work.”
  • “You are who you spend your time with, and my team at Haynes Boone is who you want to be around. We know each other's families, we lift each other up, we collaborate, and we have fun doing what we do. Our office is a mixture of political leanings, but we respect everyone and support each other in our outside activities.”

Getting Hired Here

info

  • “Firm recruiting is very competitive—the firm looks for strong candidates on paper and off paper. Grades are an important barrier; however, the firm gives great weight to diversity, personality, and intangible factors.”
  • “Haynes Boone considers the typical factors (grades, school attended, etc.), but I believe we are more concerned about finding people who fit in with our collegial culture, too. We try to hire people who are not just smart and hardworking, but also kind and pleasant to work with.”
  • “I believe the firm likes well-rounded candidates, with strong academic performances and involvement in the law school or community. They really want to ensure you fit within the firm's culture of personable, kind, intelligent, and hardworking people. Attorneys or partners giving interviews are given instructional guidance materials, and the candidates’ materials, far in advance of the actual interview.”
  • “While grades are important, I think our firm is pretty flexible when it comes to school, journal experience, prior work experience, etc. Ultimately, the most important thing is whether the person is a good fit for our firm. A good number of our attorneys come from Texas schools, since we are headquartered in Dallas. There's a wide range of attorneys here, however, and the firm has done a fantastic job of recruiting from other schools nationwide.”
