When President Ford signed ERISA in 1974, few law firms were prepared to meet the new demand for representation, but Groom Law Group founder Ted Groom had already been actively involved getting ERISA through the legislative process. To this day, many of the firm's lawyers have had extensive prior careers as federal regulators or Hill staff, including having held positions in the Labor Department, Treasury Department, as ERISA counsel to the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources, the IRS, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation and Tax Counsel to the majority staff on the Senate Committee on Finance and the House Committee on Ways and Means.

And with its sole office in the nation's capitol, Groom Law continues to be closely tapped in to the sources of U.S. employee benefits law. A variety of practice groups guide clients through what the firm calls the "byzantine regulatory framework" of employee benefits law, including issues such as public and multiemployer plans, benefits-related policies, executive compensation, tax issues, pension plans, health care issues and benefits litigation.
