About Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto

Fitzpatrick, Cella is a highly-decorated boutique which has made intellectual property its sole focus (as perhaps made obvious by the "We are IP" motto gracing its website). With offices in New York, Washington, DC and California, the firm provides patent and trademark counsel for a wide array of industries, including pharmaceuticals, energy, biotechnology, computers and electronics, transportation and telecommunications.

Patents, Trademarks and Squaring Off with the ITC

Founded in 1971 as a six-partner firm, Fitzpatrick, Cella has grown to employ a legal team of about 175 attorneys and has claimed its place as one of the country's top IP firms. Fitzpatrick attracted high-profile clients early in its history, securing patents for Canon and Bristol-Meyers and defending DuPont in International Trade Commission proceedings within the first two decades of its founding. Since then, the firm has worked with other heavy-hitters like IBM, Calvin Klein, Phillips-Van Heusen, Bausch & Lomb, PepsiCo, Prudential, MTV Networks and BigPharma companies like AstraZeneca, Pfizer and UCB.

Fitzpatrick, Cella surpasses many other IP firms in the sheer number of patents issued, ranking in Intellectual Property Today's annual Top Patent Firm survey, and, according to the firm, prosecutes twice the number of patents as any other New York-based practice. Although its offices are U.S.-based, Fitzpatrick also helps clients coordinate international IP and litigation strategies.

Such IP expertise does not come without years of hard labor in the academia mines-many Fitzpatrick attorneys hold PhDs, and almost all have some form of technical or scientific degree and experience in chemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, electronics, physics, computers and the mechanical arts, in addition to their JDs.

E-Commerce IP Pioneers

In the 1990s, Fitzpatrick also became an early leader in electronics and computer-related IP work, in its words, "drafting and prosecuting patent applications on internet business methods even before the term 'e-commerce' was coined." The firm has handled IP disputes regarding printers, video games, wireless technology and GPS systems.
