About Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP

Prominent Denver firm Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP serves both growing and established businesses in the Rocky Mountain West and beyond. The firm is known for its corporate finance, energy law and natural resources practices, with specialties in complex commercial litigation, regulatory guidance and securities and M&A transactions.

Distinction in Denver

With an office settled 5,280 feet above sea level, DGS keeps above the rest in more ways than one. Founded in 1915 by attorneys Mason Lewis and James Grant to help clients navigate then-new tax laws in the wake of the 16th Amendment, DGS is from its roots a Denver firm. As a result of its geographic location, DGS has special expertise serving clients in industries like coal, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy and technology. Its M&A reputation is also well-earned; clients have entrusted DGS with a combined $15 billion in M&A transactions both domestically and internationally. Energy companies such as BP and Delta Petroleum also make up a large portion of the firm's client roster.

Going Once, Going Twice…

The offices of a law firm may not seem like the ideal place to host a sandwich auction, but DGS likes to break from the mold. As part of its representation of Spicy Pickle, a Colorado sandwich shop chain, the firm hosted an auction for the chain's corporate assets to replenish losses of $4.76 million it incurred from defaulted loans.

Emerald for Sale

While million-dollar deal negotiations are run of the mill for DGS, the firm's clients are more often interested in riches of the "oil as black gold" variety. DGS served as counsel to Emerald Oil Inc.'s sale of 30,902 mineral acres the company held in the Sand Wash Basin for $10 million in cash, at a unit price of $325 per acre, to a private oil and gas company. The acres that were sold were located in Wyoming and Colorado as part of an area known as Fly Creek Prospect. In addition to the sale, DGS also advised Emerald Oil in reassigning its coal bed methane operation in Fly Creek.

Indian Law in and Beyond the Rockies

DGS's Rocky Mountain location has also allowed the firm to carve out an interesting niche in the area of Indian Law. Its practice has served tribes throughout the Western U.S. and Alaska, including the Navajo and Jicarilla Apache in New Mexico and Arizona, the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute in Colorado, the Shoshone-Arapahoe in Wyoming, the Blackfeet and Crow in Montana and the Western Shoshone and Paiute in Nevada. DGS advises tribes, tribal associations and companies associating with tribes in matters such as real estate, investment, government housing and regulatory issues.
