Before two Yale Law graduates started their own firm in 1909,
the two friends held highly esteemed public positions, with Homer
Cummings having served as mayor of Stamford while Charles Lockwood
served as the city's chief probate judge. Since its beginnings from
the fifth floor of the Stamford National Bank Building, the firm
has grown throughout Connecticut, opening offices in Greenwich and
West Hartford as well as expanding further south to Florida setting
up shop in Bonita Springs, Naples and Palm Beach Gardens.
A full-service firm of over 100 attorneys, Cummings &
Lockwood serves private individuals and commercial entities,
ranging from middle market to Fortune 500 companies. In 2009, the
firms celebrated the milestone of its first centennial. With one of
the largest trusts and estates practices in the U.S., Cummings
& Lockwood still retains loyal clients that date back to the
firm's inception. Although the firm does complete hundreds of
wills, trusts, and tax returns each year, the attorneys relish in
taking on more challenging wealth-preserving estate plans, help
build up charitable foundations, and are cast as trusted advisors
to their clients' wealth.
The firm's trusts and estates practice is so deeply rooted in
who they are that attorneys regularly publish articles on the
practice area, with many appearing in Trusts and Estates
Magazine. Cummings & Lockwood's attorneys have
individually received national acclaim for their work in this
practice area, with many listed in The Best Lawyers in America
2016. Among these, several attorneys have held their position on
the list, leading up to even several decades.
