About Cole Schotz Meisel Forman & Leonard P.A.

Cole, Schotz, Meisel, Forman & Leonard, P.A. is a New Jersey-based firm with strengths in litigation, bankruptcy law, corporate issues and employment law.

Mid-Atlantic Multitaskers

Trial attorney Mendon Morrill and David Cole--a labor arbitrator who counseled every U.S. president from Harry S. Truman through Gerald Ford regarding national labor crises--founded the firm that would become Cole Schotz in 1928. Although the firm continues to deal with employment law issues, the firm's legal team of over 110 attorneys now handles almost every type of business issue. The firm's main practice areas are litigation, real estate, bankruptcy and corporate restructuring, tax, trusts and estates, corporate, finance and business transactions, employment, environmental and construction services. Cole Schotz sports offices in Delaware, New York, Texas and Maryland in addition to its New Jersey headquarters. Its Fort Worth office, opened in 2010 from the remnants of Warner Stevens, concentrates largely on bankruptcy and corporate restructuring practices.

The firm also has a notable litigation practice, which Benchmark Litigation has recognized as one of the best in New Jersey. According to the publication, Cole Schotz's legal team has "carved itself somewhat of a niche in commercial disputes and restructuring litigation."

Cole Schotz's client roster includes small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. Some of the firm's more well-known clients have included Bentley motorcars, Toys "R" Us, Inc., the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Liberty Mutual Surety, Magnacare, Oxford Health Plans, UBS and Volkswagen of America Inc. While some of its clients are national and even international companies, the firm does its share of Jersey-based business. For example, it represented Clifton-based defense contractor Swiss Tech when the Defense Department investigated the company for failing to obtain an export license to ship gun parts to a Chinese company.

When Foodie Havens Go Bust

Where restaurants enter legal or bankruptcy troubles, Cole Schotz is in the game. When culinary entrepreneur Chris Cannon had to suddenly shutter his well-reviewed Manhattan Italian fine-dining hot spots Alto and Convivio, Cole Schotz represented the restaurateur. And when H&H bagel--a New York staple and one of the largest producers of bagels around--went bust along with several other connected companies, a Cole Schotz representative stepped in as rent receiver for the landlord of the bagel empire's manufacturing facilities. A Cole Schotz attorney also served as mediator for Claim Jumper Restaurants LLC when the Gold Rush-themed restaurant chain ran out of gold and filed for Chapter 11.
