Carlton Fields Jorden Burt

Carlton Fields Jorden Burt Company Profile

Founded in Tampa in 1901, Carlton Fields has established itself as a southeast name throughout Florida, in Atlanta and New York. With practice areas ranging from antitrust and trade regulation to intellectual property, the firm has most recently earned acclaim for its real estate and construction practices.

Spreading Through the Sunshine State

Giddings Mabry founded Carlton Fields over a century ago with the help of his father Milton Mabry--a former Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice--and Doyle Carlton--who would go on to become Florida's 25th  governor. Initially opening shop in Tampa, the firm has remained mostly Florida-centric, with offices in Miami, Orlando, Tallahassee and West Palm Beach. But the firm has branched beyond the sunshine state with offices in Atlanta, Georgia and New York, New York. With a roster of Fortune 100 clients and approximately 300 attorneys, Carlton Fields ranked among the nation's largest law firms and was particularly well regarded in its home state. But it gets better--the firm expanded upon completion of its merger with Jorden Burt, LLP, which was announced in October 2013. The new firm, called Carlton Fields Jorden Burt, has 370 lawyers and government consultants across 10 offices and became fully operational in early 2014.

A Diversified Endeavor

A leader in legal diversity, Carlton Fields has been recognized for its diversity initiatives by such publications as the Minority Law Journal and MultiCultural Law. The firm has also been voted No. 1 for Overall Diversity by Vault each year since 2010. Since 2010, Carlton Fields has offered a Diversity Scholarship Program, which provides select first-year law students with a paid summer associateship and an academic scholarship. The firm also sponsors mentoring and scholarship programs for Florida law students, as well as helps fund events for the Cuban American Bar Association, a group to which several Carlton Fields attorneys belong.

The firm also has an active women's forum known as the Women's Initiative Network, which promotes networking among female attorneys and holds events designed to help women pursue career goals. Carlton Fields counts among its female leaders shareholder Edith Osman, who was the second woman in the state's history to be elected president of the Florida bar, shareholder Sylvia Walbolt, who has been named one of the top 10 women litigators by the National Law Journal, and Gwynne Young, the 2012 President of the Florida Bar Association.

Moreover, the firm's Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN) powers initiatives that have an impact within and beyond the firm. GLEN recently partnered with Equality Florida Institute to create and distribute the third edition of A Legal Handbook for LGBT Floridians and Their Families, an estate planning handbook for gay and lesbian families. Carlton Fields also teamed up with Jenner & Block to represent the American Psychological Association as amicus curiae in the appeal of Florida's gay adoption ban (in holding that the ban violated the Florida Constitution's equal protection clause, the Court quoted the brief submitted by Carlton Fields and Jenner & Block).

Beyond a Real Estate Reputation

Carlton Fields attorneys have been recognized by the Legal 500 for their work in the real estate and construction areas, which have become particularly important in Florida's troubled real estate market. The firm has been involved in a number of significant real estate matters, including cases involving mortgage fraud investigations spearheaded by the U.S. Attorney's office.

While the firm excels in real estate, it also advises on a broad range of practices including antitrust regulation and bankruptcy law for a variety of industries, and lobbies Florida legislators on its clients' behalf through its Government Law and Consulting Practice Group. Carlton Fields has strategically used its Florida footprint to reach out over the gulf to represent Latin American businesses, in addition to clients based in Europe and Asia. Furthermore, with a legal team that includes former software designers and programmers, Carlton Fields keeps up with the latest on law and technology and counsels on a range of intellectual property issues. The firm has represented authors, newspapers and movie studios and corporations, advising such high-profile clients as publishing house Simon & Schuster and bestselling horror writer Stephen King. Its IP work has also included advising the Senate Judiciary Committee on modifying copyright law, responding to claims by patent trolls and protecting business trademarks from infringement.
