About Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC

Pittsburgh-based firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney has 160 years of practice and expansion under its belt, having represented clients like Bank of America, Continental Airlines and professional sports teams from its 16 offices around the U.S.

In and Out of the Keystone State

In 1850, after serving in Congress as a Whig representative from Pennsylvania, attorney Moses Hampton founded the Pittsburgh firm which would later become Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney. In 2005, the firm acquired Burns, Doan, Swecker & Mathis, a firm with a focus on international IP law focusing on patent and trademark prosecution-an expertise which has landed Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney on Intellectual Property Today's list of top 25 trademark firms in the U.S.

In 2006, the firm-then known as Buchanan Ingersoll-merged with 50-year-old fellow Pittsburgh outfit Klett Rooney Lieber & Schorling PC, which had core practices of commercial litigation, real estate and business finance and government relations. Several years later, among other acquisitions, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney absorbed a Pennsylvania energy boutique firm to bolster its energy practice.

Now with offices in California, Pennsylvania and a string of locations up the east coast from Florida to Washington, DC to New York, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney is on National Law Journal's list of the 250 largest law firms in the U.S. The firm's practices include litigation, corporate law, family law, energy and utility law and government contracts.

Lobbying the State

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney also has a meaty lobbying practice through its government relations department. In fact, the firm claims to have the largest government relations force in Pennsylvania. Ranked by Influence Magazine as the 17th largest law firm in terms of lobbying revenue, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney also has lobbying forces in Florida, New York and a federal-level government relations experts team consisting of former congressional staffers and military professionals. The firm boasts influence in reigning in state sales tax to services, legalizing slots games, and legislation modernizing health care payment systems in Pennsylvania.

Steeler Nation

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney also works as counsel for its hometown's Superbowl-title addicted AFC team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The firm's attorneys have counseled the team on restructuring its ownership as well as on the legal aspects of developing, financing and constructing Heinz Field, the home field of the Steelers and the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. Steelers founder Art Rooney's son, Art Rooney II, is a partner at the firm in its state-level government relations practice in Pittsburgh and also serves as president and co-owner of the Steelers. In other sports dealings, the firm's attorneys have counseled the mayor's office in its negotiations to keep the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, as well as played a hand in the restructuring of the formerly bankrupt Pittsburgh Penguins.
