About Bricker & Eckler LLP

The Midwest-based powerhouse Bricker & Eckler is a full-service law firm that operates out of the firm's six offices across Ohio. Like its U.S. Senator namesake founder, Bricker is a strong force in Ohio legal and public life, advising businesses, nonprofit organizations, municipalities, school districts, health care facilities, government agencies and individuals. The firm focuses in health care, insurance, financial services, manufacturing, education, construction and real estate, with extensive experience in a variety of specialized practice areas, including shale oil and gas, complex litigation, economic development, corporate governance, public utilities, advanced energy, environmental issues and public finance.

An Ohio Staple

Bricker was founded in Columbus Ohio in 1945 by John W. Bricker, Ralph Marburger, William S. Evatt, and Robert Barton. Before founding the law firm, the firm's four founders came a hodgepodge of varying backgrounds; John Bricker came from a political background, having served as Ohio Attorney General, Ohio governor, U.S. Senator, as well as trying his hand at a bigger office when he ran as Thomas E. Dewey's running mate in the 1944 presidential election against Franklin D. Roosevelt. Ralph Marburger switched to law from the Ohio Bell Telephone Company, Bill Evatt had been appointed under John Bricker when he was Attorney General and later became tax commissioner when Bicker was Governor, and Bob Burton was the firm's best known lawyer at the firm's founding, when it was called "Barton's firm."

Back to School

Aside from its Senatorial connection, another claim to fame was Bricker's representation of the Ohio Coalition for Equity & Adequacy of School Funding in the landmark 1997 Ohio Supreme Court state constitutional law case DeRolph v. State. In the 1991 case, the Ohio Coalition for Equity & Adequacy of School Funding represented over 500 schools against the State of Ohio for failing to provide adequate funding to educate the state's students, a topic still relevant to debates of education today. In a 4-3 victory that found the state as failing to provide adequate funding for schools, the court looked back on the case for over a decade after, as more authorized state funds became allocated particularly for schools.

To a Future Ahead

Since 1945, Bricker has built a scope of practices that have landed the firm on a series of rankings, most recently by Best Lawyers for their 2017 edition where 66 of Bricker's attorneys were selected by peers, representing nearly half of the firm's attorneys. In addition, U.S. News & World Report ranked Bricker in 43 practice area. The Ohio-based firm continuously ranks especially high in its home state, having ranked in banking & finance, construction, healthcare, labor & employment, litigation, natural resources & environment, and real estate by Chambers USA in 2016.
