Blake Lapthorn

The Scoop

With more than 100 partners across four offices, Blake Lapthorn sits well within the ranks of the UK's top 100 law firms. One of the largest law firms in the South East, it also has a solid presence in London.

Four by four

Blake Lapthorn is the product of four consecutive mergers in four years. Portsmouth firm Sherwin Oliver, Oxford's Linnells and Hampshire's White & Bowker were the first three practices to unite with Blake Lapthorn. Then, in 2006, Blake Lapthorn Linnell joined forces with London-based IP and IT boutique Tarlo Lyons, a profitable tie-up that increased the firm's size, turnover and renown in the City. The firm's London presence was immediately multiplied nearly fivefold, from 5 to 24 partners, and in 2007 the firm was included in the Legal 500 London rankings for the first time.

A well-rounded approach

This rapid growth has extended the firm's ability to offer a full range of legal services for companies, organisations and private individuals. Blake Lapthorn's key areas of practice include corporate and commercial, litigation and dispute resolution, property and private client work. Other areas of expertise include intellectual property and IT, areas for which Tarlo Lyons was best known, as well as a growing social housing practice that brings together expertise from the real estate, charities and property litigation teams.

In finance and lending, the firm counsels such top-tier clients as Allied Irish Bank (GB), Bank of Scotland, Abbey, The Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays. The firm's highly-rated licensing team boasts both national and regional clients, including Laurel Pub Company, Mitchells & Butlers, Somerfield Stores, the John Lewis Partnership and the BBC.

Keeping it professional

Blake Lapthorn has a professional regulatory team that advises regulatory agencies throughout the country in law, accounting and health care. The firm has been appointed by three regulatory bodies, The Royal Pharmaceutical Society, the General Osteopathic Council and the General Chiropractic Council, which monitor the standards of heath care professionals in the UK. Blake Lapthorn also sits on the panel for the Metropolitan Police.

Recent News

A new social mobility scheme

In September 2011, Blake Lapthorn joined 22 other top law firms to launch PRIME, a new programme whose goal is to provide "quality work experience" to state school students who have been traditionally under-represented in the legal profession. Law firm members undertake eight commitments, including to offer a certain number of work experience placements, to provide financial assistance to ensure that targeted students are able to participate, and to maintain contact with participants after the experience ends.

IT win for IBM

Blake Lapthorn successfully defended technology titan IBM against a £2.5 million claim by the London Borough of Southwark for alleged misrepresentations in the sale of an IT system and related services. The council claimed the company had misrepresented the capabilities of third-party data management software, but in March 2011, following a trial in the Technology and Construction Court, Justice Akenhead ruled that the quality of the software was satisfactory and that in any case the council was aware of the system's capabilities when it purchased it. The judge dismissed the action with costs.

Reducing litigation risks

In June 2010, Blake Lapthorn entered into an agreement with FirstAssist Legal Protection to launch a new After the Event (ATE) insurance scheme. The deal gives Blake Lapthorn authority to broker a branded ATE insurance solution for litigation clients. While the firm's commercial litigation team already has its own system, Focus, to manage disputes, the new scheme gives claimants the opportunity to protect themselves from exposure to adverse costs, should they lose a case and be required to pay their opponents' legal fees.
