About Balch & Bingham LLP

Founded in Birmingham in 1920, Balch & Bingham has grown to become not only one of the largest firms in Alabama, but also a major player across the Sunbelt, its reach extending as far as Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The firm's largest groups include litigation, corporate and securities, intellectual property, financial services and labor and employment in addition to more niche specialties like utilities, nuclear energy, gaming and sports law.

A Big New Deal in Birmingham

In 1920, Judge William Logan Martin Jr.--a World War I veteran and graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and the University of Alabama law school--decided to start a private law practice in Birmingham. In the firm's early years Martin's main client was the Alabama Power Company, where his brother sat as president. As the firm grew and Martin formed partnerships with other attorneys, the firm assisted the power company in developing huge hydropower projects, and even helped hash out the Constitutional questions surrounding President Roosevelt's New Deal initiatives before SCOTUS and Congress. Starting in the 1990s, the firm spread out through a series of new offices.

Thanks in part to a series of mergers, Balch & Bingham has grown to over 200 attorneys in six offices in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Washington, D.C. The firm is still a major player in the energy market, serving clients like the Nevada Power Company. Reinforcing its energy practices is a strong lobbying practice whose clients include Alabama Power Company, the Biotechnology Association of Alabama and Lending Tree. The firm has also recently expanded its commercial real estate practice, which counseled one of the first "green" shopping centers in the United States, a $30 million complex in Atlanta.

Always Be Prepared

Balch & Bingham also boasts an active community service program. Since the 1990s, the firm has been a "partner-in-education" with a Birmingham middle school. The firm is also a longtime sponsor of a Boy Scouts of America explorer post designed to help young people learn about the practice of law through activities such as mock trials, court observation, practice negotiations and witness examination skills.
