A firm with offices across the Southeast as well as locations in
Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC, Baker Donelson is a
full-service law firm that also boasts a strong public policy
practice supported by a policy advisor team with multiple ties to
DC, Baker Donelson represents clients nationally and
internationally in more than 30 practice areas.
Three Generations of Bakers
The firm that would become Baker Donaldson was founded in
Huntsville, Tennessee in 1888 by James F. Baker. Baker's son, U.S.
Representative Howard Baker, Sr., and grandson Howard Baker, Jr,
who served as U.S. Senator, Majority Leader, and White House Chief
of Staff, were also attorneys at the firm. Howard Baker Sr. was the
last lawyer at Baker Donelson's original Huntsville office, which
closed its doors after his death in 2014.
21st Century Growth Spurt
From those humble beginnings, Baker Donelson has since expanded
to become one of the largest law firms in the country, and the
firm's recent growth has been swift and certain. The firm grew from
270 attorneys and public policy advisors in 2003 to more than 775
by 2017. In 2016 Baker Donelson expanded its reach by adding an
office in South Carolina. The firm continued to grow in 2017 by
merging with the law firm of Ober | Kaler in Maryland, Virginia and
an additional office in Washington D.C.
Innovative Service Delivery
Baker Donelson emphasizes technology and strives to continually
improving service delivery to clients. One example of this is the
firm's patent pending legal project management system called
BakerManage. This collaborative platform, among other things,
provides clients with real-time access to project status,
documents, budgets and expenses. Clients and legal team members can
store and share documents, communicate with each other and view
content. BakerManage was recognized by the International Legal
Technology Association (ILTA) in 2012 with a Distinguished Peer
Award for "Project of the Year."
Best Place to Work
Baker Donelson does not reserve its largesse for its clients
alone-the firm has also been one of the few law firms to rank in
Fortune's 100 best companies to work for list 8 years in a
row, earning praise from the magazine for its "strong commitment to
public service" and higher than average salaries for multiple
levels of personnel. The firm has also been recognized by the
Atlanta Journal Constitution's "Top Workplaces in Atlanta"
and Business Alabama's "Best Companies to Work for in
Alabama." It has been named to "Best Places to Work" lists in
Birmingham, AL; Atlanta, GA; New Orleans, LA; Jackson, MS; Memphis
and Nashville, TN; and Houston, TX.
A Global Outlook
To meet client needs nationally and internationally, the firm
formed a Global Business Team. This group of more than 45
professionals has helped U.S. and non-U.S. clients take advantage
of global opportunities in over 90 countries spanning six
continents. Members of the team routinely work with U.S. clients in
China, Japan, the United Kingdom, Central and Eastern Europe,
Africa, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America. The team also
regularly assists non-U.S. businesses and individuals in connection
with their activities within the United States.
The firm is also associated with the Howard Baker Forum-a
bipartisan domestic policy and international relations think tank
which, according to the firm's site, provides "a platform for
examining specific, immediate, critical issues affecting the
nation's progress at home and its relations abroad."
