Savvis Communications Corporation

  • Overview

Savvis serves up a wide array of network services. The company primarily provides hosting and cloud infrastructure services, including data colocation and hosted software, for businesses from more than 50 data centers across Asia, Europe, and North America. It also provides managed network services such as enterprise security, customized implementations, migrations, and utility computing.  Savvis, which is a subsidiary of US phone company CenturyLink, specializes in e-commerce, enterprise application services, hosting and content management, and infrastructure optimization for clients in the financial, media, retail, software, and government industries, among others.

Change in Company Type

The company was acquired in 2011 by CenturyLink for nearly $2.5 billion (including the assumption of about $550 million of debt). The acquisition, which established CenturyLink as the country's third-largest telecommunications company, was part of CenturyLink's broader effort to expand and diversify its enterprise business while the market for consumer wired telecommunications suffers from the migration of callers wireless accounts.

Geographic Reach

Savvis serves clients worldwide. In addition to the US, it has offices in Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Poland, Singapore, and the UK.

Sales and Marketing

Savvis targets large and midsized businesses and federal government entities using the Savvis or savvisdirect brands. Customers include the American Hospital Association, Discovery Communications, and Hallmark.

Strategy

The company is seeking to capitalize as more and more organizations transition to the cloud. In 2013 it introduced Savvis Cloud Data Center, a virtual data center service built on VMware technologies, for businesses in Asia, Europe, and North America. Earlier that year it extended its Cloud Application Database, a pay-per-use service, into Asia and launched a private cloud service called AppGridSM.

Savvis is also investing heavily in its data center network to meet growing demand. In 2013 it opened new centers in Hong Kong and London and announced expansions to facilities in eight other cities, including Boston, Singapore, and Washington, DC.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In late 2012 the company bought the assets of CIBER’s IT outsourcing business for about $6 million. The move increased Savvis’ client roster and expanded its application management and help-desk support services.
