About Overton's, Inc.

Gander Mountain operates outdoor sporting goods stores focused on a variety of outdoor activities, such as hunting, camping, and fishing, in two dozen states. In addition to outdoor equipment and related accessories, the retailer also sells apparel and footwear. Based in Minnesota, Gander Mountain operates nearly 130 outdoor lifestyle stores across two dozen US states primarily across the Southeast, South Central, and Midwestern US. In 2017 the retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection; Camping World subsequently agreed to acquire Gander Mountain's assets.

Gander Mountain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2017. The retailer intends to restructure its debt and has been put up for sale; it expects the sale to close by May 2017. Outdoor merchandise retailer Camping World agreed to acquire the company's assets.

Geographic Reach

Gander Mountain's outdoor lifestyle stores offer customers some 6.9 million sq. ft. of retail space in 24 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Sales and Marketing

Besides brick-and-mortar stores, the outdoor retailer sells its products online.

To promote its hunting gear business, Gander Mountain has partnered with others. It formed an alliance with Three Forks Ranch, which specializes in fly fishing and big game hunting in North America, to design a new product line for the discriminating outdoorsman. Also its partnership includes the Warrior Dash, the world's largest obstacle race series that is held on more than 50 of the world's challenging and rugged terrains.

The sporting goods chain has opened a handful of new stores during the past couple of years and has expanded its retail footprint in Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina, Minnesota, Florida, and Georgia. Since then, Gander Mountain has strengthened its presence in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Virginia. In 2015 it opened a store in Frisco, Texas. In 2014 the company opened new locations in O'Fallon, Missouri; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Houston; Montgomery; Newnan, Georgia; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Texas (Killeen, Waco, El Paso, Lake Worth); Woodbridge, Virginia; Mobile, Alabama; Algonquin, Illinois; Monroe; Grandville; Merrillville; Peoria; Southwest Charlotte; Champaign; Chattanooga; and Greenfield. It also reopened its Johnson City, New York location.

Gander Mountain is looking to diversify its revenues by outfitting some of its stores with indoor shooting ranges. Gun sales have spiked during the past few years and the move allows the sporting goods retailer to promote gun safety and sell firearms.

In 2014 the company added a new omni-channel fulfillment method at its stores across the US enabling customers to get the products they order online the same day that they make the purchase.

Company Background

While Gander Mountain had sold fishing and pontoon boats since 2007 through an arrangement with Tracker Marine Group, a unit of Bass Pro Shops, the retailer exited its all terrain vehicle (ATV) and boat categories in 2010. Founded in 1960 as an outdoor catalog operation, Gander Mountain went private in 2010.
