If catalogs are considered to be junk mail, then Hanover Direct
is one big junkyard dog. Mailing more than 180 million catalogs per
year, the company sells home fashions through its catalogs The
Company Store , Company Kids ,
Domestications , as well as men's and women's apparel
brands via catalog titles Silhouettes and
Undergear. Each Hanover Direct catalog also operates a
corresponding e-commerce site for mobile consumers. As a side
business, the company makes comforters and pillows under the
Scandia Down brand and sells them in its catalogs, on its websites,
and through several retail outlet stores in Wisconsin. Hanover
Direct is owned by the New York-based hedge fund Chelsey
Based in Weehawken, New Jersey, Hanover Direct operates several
catalog and e-commerce business units nationwide. The company makes
its Scandia Down products at a factory in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and
sells them across the Americas.
Sales and Marketing
Hanover Direct is a multi-channel retailer, selling products
from the catalogs it publishes and from the e-commerce site it
develops. The company also markets Scandia Down comforters and
pillows that it makes. They're sold through more than 150 retailers
across North and South America.
Hanover Direct has pared down its operations and has reduced its
brand portfolio from 22 titles to about half a dozen. Recent
divestments include the apparel brands International Male and the
company appears to be winding down its Silhouettes brand.
The multi-channel retailer has seen sales fall in recent years as
consumers spent less on discretionary items such as clothing and
linens. In response to the steep drop off in business, the company
has shuttered its York County, Pennsylvania, call center. Having
once employed 500 workers there in its heyday, the company laid off
its final 35 employees in 2013. The company is focusing on its best
selling brands and building its e-commerce operations.
