Gawker Media LLC

One publication actually condones stalking. Gawker Media publishes the celebrity-obsessed Manhattan's media news, pop culture, and gossip blog, Gawker.com. The blog's Gawker Stalker feature keeps tabs on the comings and goings of celebrities in New York. Gawker Media is the brain child of Nick Denton, a former Financial Times writer and founder of Moreover Technologies. Gawker.com was launched in 2002 and other Gawker Media blogs soon followed, covering niche topics such as electronic gadgets (Gizmodo), sports news (Deadspin), and feminist culture (Jezebel). Gawker Media includes nearly 10 blogs, which earn the bulk of their money through ad revenue. Denton owns the company.

The company continues to make changes to portfolio of content as it adapts to the ever-changing world of online media. In 2011 it launched a site redesign that drastically changed its layout to a more magazine-style format. Denton said the change repositioned Gawker from a blog to a news site. Previously, the company added a new site into the fold when it acquired CityFile for an undisclosed amount in 2010. The site is a people directory, offering news about more than 2,000 notable New Yorkers. The company made the purchase to increase its total visitors and create "new topic and people pages" on Gawker.

Before these product enhancements, the company had made several cuts in response to a slowing economy and sluggish advertising sales. In late 2008 and early 2009 the company folded its Defamer and Valleywag blogs into Gawker.com. As a result, Gawker staffers now cover Defamer and Valleywag's territory (Hollywood and Silicon Valley, California, respectively). Posts for the two blogs appear on Gawker.com and on slimmed-down Defamer- and Valleywag-branded sites. The consolidation was made in order to make it easier to sell space to advertisers. In addition, Gawker sold-off some of its online properties during 2008, including Idolator (music blog), Gridskipper (urban travel blog), and Wonkette (political blog). Later that year it sold consumer information blog Consumerist to the Consumers Union.
