International Data Group (IDG) is a publishing giant with digital appeal. The world's top technology publisher, IDG produces popular magazines and newspapers -- including PC World, Macworld, and CIO magazine (through CXO Media) -- in dozens of languages for more than 280 million readers. All total, IDG operates 200 print titles and 460 websites featuring technology content. IDG also provides technology market research through its IDC (International Data Corporation) unit, produces more than 700 technology-focused industry events, and offers lead generation and marketing services for tech companies. All total, IDG reaches audiences in some 97 countries. Patrick McGovern founded the company in 1964.
The company's content offerings focus on audience segments such as enterprise (business decision-makers), technology enthusiasts (early adopters of new products), and gamers. Its content is supported by the IDG News Service, a 24-hour news organization that reports on IT news to the company's online network from bureaus in Asia, Europe, and the US. The company also offers custom publishing services; its ContentWorks is a custom publishing division that creates white papers, catalogs, training materials, websites, and mobile media.
While tech publishing is still the company's bread and butter, IDG has been adopting to a slowdown in the media industry by expanding its marketing capabilities. This includes the launch of the IDG TechNetwork, which aggregates blogs for tech advertisers, as well as its IDG Amplify online ad unit, which allows users to share ads via social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. In addition, IDG Connect provides lead generation for technology marketers and sales teams.
Benefitting from its tech knowledge, the company learned early to deliver many of its titles exclusively online, saving on print and delivery costs, and getting information to readers quicker. Since 2011, more than half of its business comes from online sources. Going forward, IDG is turning its focus toward the mobile Internet user and the more than one billion 3G phone users in the world, optimizing brands for mobile access on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. Such offerings include Macworld for the iPad, made available via technology from Zinio. In 2012 IDG had some 200 mobile sites and apps across its portfolio of brands.
Also part of the company's strategy is growing its presence in China, India, and Eastern Europe. IDG has expanded to include more than 40 publications in China, and each year it holds some 20 expositions and 60 conferences in that country.
