About The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America

The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America keeps a sharp eye on the investments of its policyholders. Guardian Life and its subsidiaries offer life insurance, disability income insurance, and retirement programs to individuals, business owners, and their employees. Its employee health indemnity plans provide HMO, PPO, and dental and vision plans, as well as disability plans. Its Guardian Insurance & Annuity subsidiary offers retirement options that include mutual funds and annuity products, which its Guardian Investor Services manages. Guardian Life also offers estate planning and education savings programs. With roots going back to 1860, the mutual company is owned by its policyholders.

Operations

Guardian Life operates through several independent subsidiaries, including Guardian Insurance & Annuity, retail broker-dealer Park Avenue Securities, and disability insurance specialist Berkshire Life Insurance Company of America. It owns dental plans in California, Nevada, and Utah under the Access brand, and offers vision, dental, and hearing benefits throughout the US through Avesis. Reed Group provides software, data analytics, and outsourced absence management services to employers, insurance companies, and health care organizations.

The company has $72 billion in assets under management. At the end of 2017, it had $637 billion in life insurance in force, a 6% increase from 2016.

Geographic Reach

Guardian Life offers its products in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Sales and Marketing

Some 2,750 financial representatives (including general agents, brokers, and wholesalers) in around 55 agencies throughout the US distribute Guardian Life's products. The company has taken advantage of its stability by building up its distribution force. It is also investing in technology to support its services, and it is focusing on building up its sales to small businesses and individuals.

Guardian serves some 26 million customers.

Financial Performance

Guardian Life's revenues increased 4% to $10.7 billion in 2017 mainly from increased premiums, annuity considerations, and fund deposits. Those totaled $8.1 billion, compared to $7.8 billion in 2016.

Despite an increase in benefits paid and other expenses, largely related to natural disasters including hurricanes and wildfires, net income also increased that year. It rose 15% to $423 million.

Strategy

To achieve growth, Guardian Life takes a long view of things in setting its strategic goals. Those goals include improving its products, expanding its distribution, and enhancing its service capabilities. The company selectively invests in opportunities that support its financial stability and strength in order to heighten its ability to pay competitive policyholder dividends over time. Guardian Life also forms strategic partnerships and has widened options for its investment customers by adding new funding vehicle options.

However, Guardian has seen a decline in participating whole life policy sales. To counteract that decline, it has added general agents and sales managers; it is also pushing to expand its group dental, group life, and disability businesses.

Mergers and Acquisitions

Guardian in 2016 completed the acquisition of Avesis Incorporated, a leading government contract vision, dental, and hearing provider. The deal strengthened Guardian's government programs business as one of the leading administrators for vision, dental and hearing benefits for government and commercial programs with 3 million members administered under Medicaid, CHIP, and Medicare Advantage programs.

The same year, Guardian acquired Aon Hewitt's Absence Management Administration Business, adding 200 blue chip customers and 1,300 employees across the US, Canada, and India.
