Scottsdale Insurance Company insures the riskier parts of life, the universe, and everything. The property/casualty insurer specializes in excess and surplus insurance lines (E&S) -- insurance coverage for higher-risk individuals and businesses including alarm contractors, bars, exterminators, and tree trimmers. The company also offers such niche products as pet insurance, professional liability, and products for public entities (cities and counties). E&S providers are not allowed to advertise directly to consumers, so Scottsdale Insurance relies upon wholesale general agents, brokers, and managers to sell its products through local agents. The company is a subsidiary of Nationwide Mutual Insurance.
Scottsdale Insurance's Freedom Specialty division offers liability coverage products for corporate officers and board members. Scottsdale Insurance also owns a majority stake in Veterinary Pet Insurance, which offers medical insurance policies for cats, dogs, and other pets throughout the US.
Scottsdale Insurance was founded in 1982. The company is part of the the Scottsdale Insurance group of companies which also includes National Casualty, Scottsdale Indemnity, and Scottsdale Surplus Lines Insurance. Scottsdale Insurance's sister company, Western Heritage Insurance, is another underwriter of E&S policies.
Scottsdale Insurance is part of Nationwide Mutual's property/casualty insurance segment, which accounts for more than two-thirds of Nationwide's annual revenues. The Scottsdale group accounts for about 15% of Nationwide's total property/casualty premiums; other Nationwide units that operate in the property/casualty space include Nationwide Insurance, ALLIED Group, Nationwide Agribusiness, and Titan Insurance. Nationwide also offers life insurance and retirement products through its Nationwide Financial Services division.
