Mapfre U.S.A. Corp.

When it comes to auto insurance, MAPFRE U.S.A. is all over the map, yet still localized. The property/casualty insurance company (a subsidiary of MAPFRE S.A.) operates through several regional units. Its flagship Commerce Insurance is among the largest personal auto and homeowners insurers in Massachusetts -- in part because of its affinity marketing programs with AAA clubs. Its Commerce West and American Commerce subsidiaries sell auto insurance in 14 states while its MAPFRE Insurance Company of New York writes private auto insurance in New York and MAPFRE Florida serves, well, Florida. MAPFRE U.S.A.'s companies sell through a network of independent agents and some brokers.

Geographic Reach

Parent MAPFRE S.A. has operations in 40 countries. MAPFRE U.S.A. serves customers in 16 US states.

Operations

The company markets its products in the US through 5,750 agents and brokers.

In 2012 it held a 39% share of the motor insurance market in Massachusetts, and a 12% share of the home insurance market.

Financial Performance

MAPFRE U.S.A.'s revenues declined by 5% in 2012, and its net income by 6%.

The company saw a growth of non-life insurance sales in 2012, up 4.3% mainly due to higher insurance prices for individuals and businesses.

Strategy

The company has expanded in the US through acquisitions and launching new products.

In 2013 Commerce Insurance launched GO MAPFRE, a new mobile application for customers in Massachusetts.

In 2012 the company introduced its DriveAdvisor Program (which provides discounts on personal auto premiums for customers who use telematics technology to monitor their driving behavior).

Mergers and Acquisitions

To boost its special risks business and expand its US operations, in 2012 MAPFRE S. A. acquired US-based Century Automotive Service, which specializes in the sale of warranty products for cars.

Company Background

Prior to the subprime mortgage lending crisis, the company also operated real estate and commercial lending subsidiary Bay Finance. However, as a result of the crisis, Bay Finance stopped writing new mortgage loans in 2008.

The Commerce Group (founded in 1972) was acquired by Spanish insurer MAPFRE S.A. in 2008, as part of MAPFRE S.A's plan to expand into the US. Following the acquisition, the company's name was changed to MAPFRE U.S.A. in early 2010.
