The Bayou State's largest health insurer, Louisiana Health Service and Indemnity, operates as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana (BCBSLA), an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. It provides health insurance products and related services to more than 1.1 million members from offices across the state. BCBSLA offers HMO, PPO, supplemental Medicare, and traditional indemnity plans, as well as the BlueSaver high-deductible plan with a health savings account. Its HMO Louisiana subsidiary offers a point-of-service (POS) plan that provides some out-of-network benefits. Customers include both individuals and employer groups. BCBSLA is a mutual insurance firm owned by its customers.
In addition to medical coverage, BCBSLA sells group life and disability insurance through its Southern National Life Insurance Company subsidiary. The unit also offers voluntary dental and accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
iLinkBlue is the company's free online service portal for providers and securely connects more than 480 medical facilities and 12,300 medical professionals statewide with Blue Cross' subscriber and claims data. iLinkBlue is one of the provider tools offered to its network providers through Access Blue, BCBSLA's overall web-based service portal.
Based in the capital city of Baton Rouge, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana boasts eight district offices statewide.
In 2011 BCBSLA subsidiary HMO Louisiana teamed up with Ochsner Health System to introduce a new model of care for the healthcare industry in Louisiana, which focuses on a coordinated system of care.
BCBSLA has also launched a fitness plan that crosses locations and chains, together with online and social media support and discounts on health and well-being products for its Louisiana members.
BCBSLA began as the Hospital Service Association in New Orleans in 1934; the Hospital Service Association of Baton Rouge started in 1939. The two organizations joined in 1975 and adopted the current name. The firm now operates eight district offices in Alexandria, Houma, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Monroe, New Orleans, and Shreveport.
