Company Background

In 2011 the company launched a new Medicare Advantage plan called HealthNow ActiveSaver, which uses a medical savings account and gives members more control over their health care costs. It also formed a new unit, HealthNow Administrative Services, in 2010 that provides third-party benefit administration services to self-funded insurance plans throughout the US.

In 2011 HealthNow became one of about a dozen health insurers ordered by the state of New York to refund close to $115 million (HealthNow's refunds totaled about $5 million) to members statewide due to alleged premium overcharges during 2010.

An earlier settlement related to alleged provider underpayments in the state led HealthNow to pay about $215,000 toward the creation of HEALTHeLink, an independent database that calculates recommended reimbursement rates for insurers, in 2009. In 2010 HEALTHeLink received federal funding to work with the state government to create an electronic health record (EHR) system.

HealthNow was founded in 1936.
