The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration
(PHMSA) helps protect the environment, property, and human life
from hazardous materials incidents. The agency ensures that
dangerous goods are transported safely to consumers and industry;
PHMSA is responsible for more than 1 million shipments
every day by highway, rail, air, and water. The
agency also manages the pipeline infrastructure in the US, as
well as provides education and training programs for
transportation professionals. PHMSA, founded under the Norman Y.
Mineta Research and Special Programs Improvement Act in 2004, has
an annual budget of about $120 million.
