Viking is the brand best known for being the crowning touch to kitchens. Viking Range began by adapting commercial stoves for use in the home. It manufactures and markets high-end, professional-grade appliances, such as dishwashers, disposals, refrigerators, freezers, ovens, blenders, mixers, outdoor grills, cookware, cutlery -- and, of course, stoves. The firm, which also makes its own branded cookware and cutlery, counts St. Charles Cabinetry as one of its divisions. Viking's items are made in the US and sold worldwide through appliance distributors. Viking is a subsidiary of oven machinery making giant Middleby Corporation.
Change of Company Type
Viking was acquired by Middleby in late 2012 for $380 million. Middleby is a major producer of commercial cooking and food processing and packaging equipment for the foodservice industry and operates through more than 30 brands.
While Viking's portfolio has remained relatively the same throughout the years, the appliance company on occasion adds to its stable of products. To offer loyal customers reasonably priced Viking bling to their kitchens, the firm in February 2011 launched the Viking Professional Coffee Maker, featuring a Sure-Temp brewing system, 12-cup thermal stainless steel carafe, and a tea basket accessory for converting to tea-making.
Viking has been noted for its focus on lifestyle -- with cooking schools (The Viking Life) and travel components (Worlds of Flavor) as its way of connecting with its customers. The culinary company opened its 16th Viking Cooking School location in Destin, Florida. Altogether, the company hosts 6,300 cooking classes nationwide for more than 77,000 students. The effort makes Viking the largest provider of cooking classes for the recreational cook in the US.
