Mayfield has kept on "moo-ving" for 90-some years. Founded in 1912, Mayfield Dairy Farms produces and distributes milk (including buttermilk, chocolate milk, half-and-half, and egg nog), ice-cream, and other cultured dairy products such as cottage cheese, whipping and sour cream, and dips. The company also offers beverages such as lemonade, orange juice, and bottled sweet tea. Mayfield Dairy serves nine southeastern US states from its Athens, Tennessee; Birmingham, Alabama; and Braselton, Georgia, plants. The company is a subsidiary of Dean Foods and is run by CEO Scottie Mayfield, grandson of founder T.B. Mayfield.
The company's milk comes in bright yellow plastic bottles. According to Mayfield, the color helps preserve the milk's freshness by blocking out UV light, which would break down nutrients and affect the milk's taste. It also uses a vacuum process to bottle its milk (the only dairy in the US to do so) as another way to preserve freshness.
Mayfield produces 69 million gallons of milk and 28 million gallons of ice cream every year.
