It was 1909 when Swiss immigrant Alfred Nickles began counting his nickels and dimes as a one-man bakery-shop operator, selling loaves door-to-door. The namesake bakery has expanded to three modern bakeries in Ohio that make a broad range of fresh-baked goods. Products include bagels, bread, breadsticks, dinner rolls, hoagies, hot dog and hamburger buns, cakes, pastries, sweet rolls, and donuts. Its lineup is sold to retail food and foodservice businesses, located mainly in the Midwest. Alfred Nickles, as a result, operates nearly 40 distribution branches in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The bakery's wholesale routes are supported by a fleet of more than 600 delivery trucks.
Sales and Marketing
The bakery business serves grocery stores, restaurants, and institutions through its more than 500 delivery routes. Alfred Nickles has reached into the public sector, as well, for growth. It has won a handful of federal contracts to supply bread products to the US Department of Justice's Bureau of Prisons.
The company has expanded in recent years. Through a deal it inked in 2011 with Aunt Millie's Bakeries (owned by Perfection Bakeries), Alfred Nickles boasts the exclusive right to make and sell Nickles-brand products in Indiana, Michigan, and parts of Illinois.
Since its founding, Alfred Nickles Bakery has morphed its business from a bakery operation that delivers products directly to homes to a regional wholesale bakery with 500-plus routes.
Awards and Recognition
Ernest Nickles, who spent 70 years working at Alfred Nickles Bakery, was named as one of the American Society of Baking's 2013 inductees to the Baking Hall of Fame.
Alfred Nickles Bakery was originally named Navarre Bakery and Ice Cream Company, a reference to its founding city Navarre, Ohio. In 1934 the company changed its name and incorporated.
