Founded in 1857, Northwestern Mutual was originally known as the Mutual Life Insurance Company of the State of Wisconsin. The company exclusively sold life insurance policies up until 1969, when it began offering disability insurance. It added retirement annuities and long-term care insurance in the late 1970s and 1990s, respectively. In 2000, the company changed its name to the more familiar Northwestern Mutual. Its corporate headquarters is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
