Webroot Software tries to keep its customers from getting tangled up in any malicious online activity. The company develops security software known as SecureAnywhere that protects PC's against spyware, pop-ups, and e-mail spam. It also offers virus protection and parental control applications, as well as a tool that erases the record of users' Internet activity and improves PC system performance. Other products are tailored for mobile devices and business applications. Webroot's customers include corporations, ISPs, educational institutions, and consumers, as well as public sector agencies. Founded in 1997 the company has received investments from Technology Crossover Ventures, Mayfield, and Accel Partners.
As part of a plan to expand its business through research and development, acquisitions, and the extension of its geographic reach, Webroot bought Stockholm-based Email Systems Scandinavia in 2010. With the deal, the company gained a better foothold in the data security software and services market in the Nordic region.
Also that year Webroot acquired security services provider Brightcloud, adding Web filtering and content classification capabilities that bolstered its new security-as-a-service offering. The deal also supported the company's geographic expansion plans with support offered in more than 30 languages. Brightcloud was integrated into Webroot's Cloud Engineering team.
In another move that year to further address the growing market for cloud computing applications, Webroot bought Web-based anti-malware software developer Prevx. The acquired company's SafeOnline product was seen as a fitting complement to Brightcloud's technology.
