Like a football fan on Sunday, AMX really knows how to work the remote control. The company designs and sells systems that control devices such as lights, audio and video equipment, and security cameras from a common remote interface. Its systems are used in corporate, educational, entertainment, industrial, and government settings. AMX also offers residential systems that control security systems, lighting, and electronic devices. The company sells through distributors and manufacturers, including Tech Data and Dell; it also has partnerships with a number of Asian vendors including Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC, Samsung, and Sony. Founded in 1982, AMX is a subsidiary of The Duchossois Group.
AMX competes primarily with Crestron in both residential and commercial markets, although a number of companies offer competing products for niche applications. In 2011 the company formed a division dedicated to its growing selection of communications network-based media and control systems. The unit focuses on the company's Vision IPTV, Inspired Signage, and Television Distribution System products in its core US and UK markets.
The company supplemented its product development efforts with an acquisition in 2011. That year AMX acquired Plano, Texas-based SchoolView Technologies to extend its ability to serve the education market. SchoolView specialize in developing software used to manage aspects of shool operation, including bell, clock and PA systems, as well as classroom audio, video and presentation tools. Its custom applications also enable the automation of such functions as remote system diagnostics and scheduling of routine equipment maintenance.
AMX continues to pursue international business to fuel growth. The company markets its products worldwide from sales offices located throughout the Americas and Europe, and it maintains offices in Asia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. AMX opened a new location in Bangalore to serve as its headquarters in India, where it serves government and defense clients, as well as businesses in the hospitality, IT, banking, and real estate industries, in particular. Also that year the company expanded its operations in Europe in 2011, opening an administrative, sales, and training office in the Netherlands in response to demand in the region.
