Uppers

The culture is humane, the people pleasant, the quality of the work top notch and the compensation (the actual cash that ends up in your account, rather than the inflated multi-year stock deals that NYC is peddling) is superior to that of similarly sized and even some of the larger firms. ****/ranters/ravers need not apply.

Downers

Hard to think of any. It is the only place to work in this business if you want a multi-decade career and don't want to dread coming to work.

Comments

People work very hard at Blair--it's a competitive industry and there is no other way to remain successful. Yet despite the pressures and competition, Blair has a pleasant work environment where shouting, cursing, ritualized humiliation and preening (in other words, the standard behaviors routinely tolerated if not lionized in the New York banks) are not found. If you are an individual who has a modicum of regard for the quality of your work environment, there is simply no where else to make a career than Blair. It also does not hurt that the senior management has seen some new faces added that have reinvigorated the franchise---it has never been stronger.

Uppers

Great support and mentorship, especially for women. Analysts are able to play a central role in the deal process. Great learning experience and work/life balance. Good compensation given living costs in Chicago.

Downers

Unpredictable staffing during first year. Long generalist period.

Comments

I think Blair is a gem within investment banking. There is great deal flow, and analysts have the opportunity to be the lead analyst on a number of deals.
