THE SCOOP

A bank decreed

Société Générale Corporate and Investment Banking is part of the French banking giant Société Générale, which was formed by a decree signed by France's then-emperor Napoleon III in 1864, founding the firm in order to "foster the development of trade and industry in France."  During the past two centuries, that's what Société Générale has done. Société Générale fast evolved into a leading European financial services company and a major player in the global market.  Today, Société Générale is divided into four businesses: retail banking, specialised financial services, global investment management and services, and corporate and investment banking. In France, the bank's retail banking division runs two distribution networks in tandem, Société Générale and Crédit du Nord. In Europe, the specialised financial services activities of the bank have seen it become a major player over the past five years. In North America, Société Générale Corporate and Investment Banking, a full service investment bank, operates in 13 cities and employs some 2,500 people. Worldwide, Société Générale CIB employs 12,000 people and operates in more than 40 countries.
