Thanks to Swissport USA, all systems are a "go." The company, a subsidiary of Swissport International, provides airport ground-services for airlines, including passenger check-in and ticketing, baggage and cargo handling, and aircraft loading and unloading. In addition, it offers aircraft maintenance (cabin cleaning and servicing), fueling, and prepping for executive aviation. Swissport USA operates at about 50 airports in the US, including Washington Dulles International, LaGuardia, and O'Hare International. Parent Swissport International, a portfolio company acquired by French private equity PAI Partners in 2011, and a leader in the ground handling industry, maintains facilities at airports around the world.
The airline industry, and airport businesses such as Swissport International that service it, have been pummeled by record-high fuel prices coupled with the global economic recession. In late 2010 Spanish construction group Ferrovial sold off Swissport International for $909 million to reduce debt and raise cash to fuel other projects. Earlier in the year, Swissport USA laid off about half its Orlando International Airport workforce.
