THE SCOOP

1920s firm rises to No. 20

Formerly known as MR Weiser, New York-based Weiser LLP was founded in 1921. Today, the firm has four offices in the metro-New York area, and a staff of over 600 that includes certified public accountants, certified financial planners and personal financial specialists. Weiser came in at No. 22 on Accounting Today's 2009 Top 100 Firms list, which ranks firms by U.S. revenue.

Weiser specializes in services for businesses as well as private clients, and has industry expertise in apparel and textile, construction, emerging technologies, family business, financial services, food services, health care, international business, manufacturing, nonprofit, professional services, real estate, retail and restaurants, textile rental, and wholesale and distribution. It also offers services to high-net-worth individuals and, like most financial services firms, has developed Sarbanes-Oxley compliance services in the years since 2002's legislative changes.

Beyond New York metro

Weiser is a member of Moores Rowland International (MRI), one of the world's top-10 associations of independent accounting firms. MRI's 140 member firms represent 19,000 employees in 92 countries around the world. Weiser is also part of an international joint venture with Mazars SCRL, a European-headquartered independent organization of audit and accounting professionals. This collaboration puts Weiser in touch with Mazars' 8,000 members in 42 countries, with the aim of providing better cross-border business services to international and multinational corporations. It also means Weiser can provide its clients with assistance in entering foreign markets, complying with foreign tax laws and creating offshore entities.

Making it big

Weiser entered a serious growth phase in 2005, when it engaged in several noteworthy mergers. These included its deal with boutique firm Leslie Sufrin & Company and the purchase of a former competitor, New Jersey-based accounting firm Lipman, Selznick & Witkowski. (The latter merger added 100 accountants to Weiser's Edison office, thereby doubling its staff in New Jersey.)

In February 2006, Weiser announced yet another merger, this time with Livingston, Wachtell & Company. Located in New York City, Livingston was founded in 1919 and provided accounting, auditing, tax and consulting services to private clients in a number of industries. Following the merger, Lipman directors Leonard Eiger and George Wachtell became consultants to Weiser, and former Lipman CPA Ira Cohen was named a Weiser partner. Headcounts at Weiser climbed, too. The firm added six new partners and over 100 employees between 2005 and 2006.

Helping out the little guy

Although Weiser does a lot of work with major national and international corporations, it also serves smaller businesses. Almost since it began, Weiser has offered family-owned businesses of any size the same accounting and consulting services it offers its larger clients. In addition to accounting and auditing, tax issues and general business consulting, Weiser provides guidance for family businesses in times of transition.

Weiser became further steeped in the business of helping small businesses in June 2007, when it merged with Cohen Friedman Dorman Leen & Co., a 30- year-old regional accounting and advisory firm specializing in family-owned and privately held businesses. "Our merger with CFDL underscores Weiser's commitment to further enhance our presence in the New Jersey marketplace," said Weiser's managing partner, Douglas Phillips, in a statement. "It also reflects our dedication to strengthening our practice niches across the firm."
