  • Overview

Three big specialties

Vantis plc and its subsidiaries provide owner-managed businesses, listed companies, not-for-profits and high-net-worth individuals with three main types of services: business advisory, business recovery and consultancy.  These groups encompass accountancy, taxation, outsourcing, restructuring and turnaround, asset finance, corporate finance and independent financial advisory services, business advice, forensic accounting and dispute resolution, business recovery and personal insolvency, outsourcing, management consultancy, company secretarial, customs duty recovery and advisory, high net worth services and sports advisory services and solutions.  The company is dedicated to developing expertise across a variety of sectors, including charities, construction, hospitality and leisure, landed estates and rural businesses, legal, manufacturing, media, medical, pensions, public companies, real estate, recruitment, sports, technology and telecoms, and travel.  Outside of the UK, the firm has expertise in providing services to various regions, including China, Israel, North America and Italy. Vantis is the UK representative of HLB International, a worldwide organization of professional accounting firms and business advisers with member firms in over 1,000 countries.  In the midst of many private concerns, Vantis stands out as one of the accounting industry's few listed firms.  In 2002, it was floated on the Alternative Investment Market.

A few more graduates, please

Many top accounting firms are trying to resist sacking staff as the recession deepens, having learned from past mistakes.  Accountancy Age recently surveyed human resources divisions at big twenty firms to get a sense of their upcoming recruitment policies and plans.  It found that, despite 1,100 job cuts in the profession between February 2007 and 2008, staff numbers should remain consistent.  The survey investigated the role graduate recruitment would play in staffing in the coming year.  Seven firms said that, in 2009, graduate recruitment levels would be similar to those in 2008.  Six firms said they would minimally cut graduate recruitment.  Vantis, however, reported that it would slightly increase graduate recruitment, which was very good news given the rough job market.

Business recovery

Although the firm's business recovery services were traditionally concentrated in London and throughout the South East, rising demand in this arena, and the growing proportion of profit share it brought in for the company has recently prompted it to propagate this division nationwide.  The breakneck speed at which the Midlands branch of business recovery services grew offered evidence that there was more room to expand before the firm reached its saturation point.  Launched in June 2008, it was so successful that it doubled staff in its Birmingham and Leicester offices from 10 to 20 within the next six months.  Other expansion initiatives quickly followed.  Chris Stirland was appointed as associate director to head the division's new corporate recovery operation in Leicester in December 2008, a move that will greatly strengthen the firm's services in this division in the East Midlands.  In January 2009, Vantis appointed Dave Broadbent to lead its new corporate recovery operation, covering Yorkshire and the North East, which will work out of both York and Darlington.
