The firm's industry expertise includes consumer business financial services; gaming, hospitality and leisure; government contracting; healthcare; life sciences; manufacturing and distribution; natural resources; nonprofit and education; private equity; public sector; real estate and construction; restaurants; and technology.

BDO's roots go back to 1910 when 22-year-old immigrant Maximilian Seidman, who grew up in a tenement on Manhattan's Lower East Side, opened a one-room office on New York City's Park Row. At the time, Seidman was one of just 2,200 CPAs in the country. As federal tax laws were established and expanded, creating demand for individual and business tax planning, Seidman's business took off. In 1917, Seidman & Seidman opened a second office in Michigan, where the firm did brisk business with the local furniture industry.

By the 1960s, the Seidman name had spread nationwide and, in 1963, it became international in scope, joining firms from Germany, Canada, the Netherlands and the U.K. to form an organization called Binder Seidman International Group. This name was changed to Binder Dijker Otte (BDO) in 1973, in honor of three European founding members of the organization; hence BDO International. The U.S. member firm retained the name "Seidman," inherited from its founder. The Seidman family was in charge of BDO Seidman until the mid-1970s, when managing partner William Seidman stepped down to work in Gerald Ford's administration. He went on to a career at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation under President George H.W. Bush. In 2010, BDO Seidman joined BDO member firms worldwide in adopting BDO as its brand name, dropping Seidman. It also changed its statutory name to BDO USA, LLP.
