Law students, budding lawyers and other aspiring legal eagles get their information from many sources. Some receive guidance from their parents. Some receive guidance from their law school career centers or from professors. Some are lucky enough to have a law firm mentor. But very few have had the chance to be guided by some of the top lawyers in the industry -- until now.
Over the past year, Vault talked with managing partners and chairs at major law firms and asked them to give their advice on the value of law school, on the future of the legal industry and on their thoughts on balancing personal life and work commitments, among other questions. We gathered their invaluable advice and now present it to you as View from the Top, a new Vault series.
We asked the managing partners the following questions. Some of the answers may make you think or make you laugh -- but if youre interested in a career in law, youll be glad you took a view from the top.
- Do you think law school adequately prepare students for a legal career?
- What personality traits do you think make for an effective lawyer?
- What has surprised you most about the legal industry?
- What have you found to be the greatest rewards of practicing law?
- What predictions do you have for the future of the legal industry?
- What would you tell young associates worried about balancing personal and work commitments?
- If you weren't practicing law, what would your dream job be?
