Private equity in the U.S.

There are only about 200 private equity companies operating at any one time in the United States, and that number can vary due to openings and closures on the small end of the scale. But the money they manage is impressive. According to the newly created Private Equity Councilformed by firms in response to increasing pressure from Washington on their activities and profits/private equity firms were responsible for $406 billion in transactions in 2006. They had already eclipsed that mark by mid-2007.

Like their venture capital cousins, private equity firms generally find specialties within the industry.
