University of Michigan Buzz Book
Welcome to the first edition of Vault's University of Michigan Buzz Book. In this new and unique guide, we publish extended excerpts and sample admissions essays from surveys of students and alumni from the University of Michigan to bring you the inside scoop on its undergraduate program. The survey comments cover the following areas:
  • Admissions
  • Academics (curriculum, workload, etc.)
  • Employment prospects
  • Quality of life
  • Social life

The guide is intended to serve as a complement to other references to colleges and universities currently available that utilize school-reported data. Unlike those guides, Vault's Buzz Books (which also include the College Buzz Book, Business School Buzz Book and Law School Buzz Book) are composed almost entirely of information provided directly to Vault from students and alumni. (We asked the University of Michigan to comment on the surveys after they were collected.)

We received comments from the University of Michigan, which we have included comments next to appropriate survey sections, offset with a different font and indented to be easily recognizable as school-provided comments. Corrections within the body of the comments are enclosed in brackets. The University of Michigan also provided separate narratives that have included them at the end of each chapter, under the heading "The School Says."

Michigan prides itself on admitting a talented and diverse class. In addition to a strong academic record, demonstrating leadership skills and a commitment to service activities, especially through the essays, is beneficial in the admissions process. These essays are also the chance to highlight your personal experiences and perspectives on diversity. Since Michigan does not interview its undergraduates, these essays (recently expanded to a requirement of three essays) are critical in the admissions process.

Admissions: The School Says

As of January 10, 2007, in accordance with an amendment to the constitution of the State of Michigan, the University of Michigan will not discriminate, nor grant preferential treatment to, any individual on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in its admissions and financial aid processes. There are some exceptions provided in the amendment the university will recognize, including one for programs that receive federal funds.

As most expect, Michigan is NOT an easy school. This is especially true if you are planning to go into the B-school, engineering or any science-related major. If you want a decent GPA in any of these majors, expect to spend most of your time studying. In any other major, as far as classes go, it is essential to register as early as possible in order to get the classes you need. This is especially true in fields such as psychology or any humanities class. These classes tend to be most popular and can go fast. It will become easier to register as you progress through school. If you are a freshman or sophomore, it will be almost impossible to get into a popular class that is closed. So the best advice in this area is to do research and know what you want to take beforehand, STAY CURRENT in your tuition payments (they will prevent you from registering if you owe money) and register exactly at the date and time you are given.

Generally, the professors are pretty down-to-earth, and willing to help if you need it. It is in your best interest to get to know your professors. It can be the difference between a B- and a C+, if your professor can put a name to a face, especially because most of your classes will be in huge lecture halls.

The Office of Career Development is amazing. People use it daily. They prepare us, help us look over resumes, conduct mock interviews, have appointment sign-up online, and have corporate presentations prepared for us. I can't even explain in words how much they help us. It is truly wonderful. They make life really easy for us. You really have no excuse not to get a job after all the resources they provide.

Companies that recruit at Ross are very prestigious firms. Many investment banking firms recruit here. Michigan seems to produce a lot of investment bankers. The alumni network is great. There is an online directory where you can search for anyone. The alumni usually have executive level positions at very well-known companies. They're always willing to help out a fellow Wolverine.

The quality of life was great. Ann Arbor is a great college town that has a cosmopolitan feel. Combine that with the diverse student body, and you get four years of great memories. Housing is guaranteed for freshman year only; after that, you can either enter a lottery to stay in the dorms or get your own place alone or with friends. I'd have to say that the food is average at best, so I did end up moving off campus with friends. The campus is beautiful and safe for the most part. Michigan has excellent athletic facilities due to its well-known sports teams.

Michigan is known for its amazing social life! There is always great live music, theater, arts and bars for everyone! There is the annual art fair, which brings in thousands of people to explore the area. One of my favorite parts about Ann Arbor is the food, there is so much ethnicity and originality that nearly everyone of a certain persuasion can be delighted. There is a huge Greek system that puts on events all year round and provides a large community for thousands of students, there are also many church organizations for those who are religious as well!
