The London Business School Buzz Book
Welcome to the second edition of Vault's London Business School Buzz Book. In this unique guide, we publish extended excerpts and sample admissions essays from surveys of students and alumni from LBS to bring you the inside scoop on its MBA program. The survey comments cover the following areas:

  • Admissions
  • Academics
  • Employment prospects
  • Quality of life
  • Social life

The guide is intended to serve as a complement to other references to business schools currently available that utilize school-reported data. Unlike those guides, Vault's Buzz Books (which also include the INSEAD Buzz Book, Business School Buzz Book , Law School Buzz Book and College Buzz Book) are composed almost entirely of information provided directly to Vault from students and alumni.

The school has a very well-run admissions process. They receive many applications from around the world given their very strong focus on international students. This means that the application process tends to be very well run.

Essentially, there are four deadlines every year. My advice would be to get in as early as you can--there is no glory in being the last person admitted, and your chances of success decrease with every round as places start to fill up.

To get in, the most important thing is your essays. I would sit down before starting to write them and make a list of four things that you see as particular strengths of your application. For LBS, the things that are generally seen as highlights include: international focus, career progression, team player (not necessarily team leader) and academic excellence. Thing is that everyone has these, so you don't really differentiate yourself at this level. Make sure that you also let the school know that you are different and that you are a human being with interests, hobbies and pursuits that will mean that the day you arrive, you will throw yourself into the community. If you have any major achievements then no matter which part of your life they occurred in, make sure they are mentioned in your essays. Don't be shy about talking about them, but remember that this is not a U.S. school, so don't be over the top in covering yourself in glory.

Core curriculum is strong and balanced, and members of the faculty are usually available, helpful and fairly good at teaching. Grading is usually fair, along the curve, although there have been slips. Workload is really variable, with the first term being commonly perceived as the worst. It includes one full month of induction (with classes on management, leadership, problem solving and ethics and, of course, unlimited team-building and socializing opportunities) and three months with five core courses--rather intense. Second term is really easy: only three courses, as all the activity is centered on the Milkround. Starting in the third term, the program becomes really flexible: five core courses and as many as three electives.

I can safely say that London Business School managed to get all the recruiters from the high-profile companies to recruit at the school. Certainly all the banks and big consulting firms were present at many times and gave us the opportunity to meet with them. The only thing that I think LBS did not do sufficiently well was to attract recruiters from other industries and countries other than the U.K. and the U.S.

I believe that the LBS Career Management Center did a superb job of preparing us for interviews and meeting with the right people at the most prestigious firms.

Quality of life at LBS is a strong selling point. The school is located directly in one of the best cities in the world. The campus is nice and overlooks an enormous park. The facilities are generally in good working order and finding space to work is rarely a problem. Housing is initially problematic, as nothing is supplied by the school, but it's usually very easy to find a flat upon arrival. Although a couple of students have been robbed, safety has not been a real issue.

Not only does one have the social and athletic clubs of LBS, but being in London means there is something for everyone. There are also new laws that keep pubs open past 11 p.m. (a big pet peeve for many). There is also a back door entrance to a pub connected to the main campus, which is where most students end up after evening classes. For such a small intake (300), many students did end up dating each other, but this just reinforces that LBS does a wonderful job of encouraging students to interact and form a cohesive community.
